I'm just meshing my lower front air intake on my 2002 wrx as my rad / aircon is getting full of bugs and stones.

Question is, how the fu*k do I attach it? Tried superglue but the contact areas are too small, tried silicon sealant but its not strong enough? Anyone???

Bend it around the lip, on the inside obviously and stick it down with no-nails or grip fill. Sounds crude but it will never move again! Silicone is ok but it takes so long to go off and can split, found this out when i done a front grill back along.

Its the proper rubberised competition mesh so it won't bend to acute angles :(

You reckon no more nails will do the job then?

If you want it to stay i would say Epoxy Resin (Araldite)you can build up blobs and attach that way.

Word of warning....

Is that the two-part stuff? That sounds better, I could just do small blobs...

I know the stuff you mean, its abit of a pain cause it wont bend, used it on a GSI cav i had once, i pondered for ages and the only way i could decide was to very gently heat it with a blue flame and bend it around the corners and then secure with no-nails or somthing like in true Lax power style! It worked though but you have to use care, to much heat and it burns. Unless you get the metal mesh which isnt so nice.

Hmmm, going to try heating a test piece and see what it does.

Do you mean meshing the outside of the hole as per the official one or doing behind the bumper?

I've done the second one by cutting some 16 gauge stainless steel mesh into approx 28" x 4", sealing it in u-strip to stop it "unravelling" and then putting it down from top of bumper after removing the top grille. It'd need to be a right fecker of a stone that gets through that (here's praying one's not got my name on it ;):))

It goes in as a single piece with a bit of persuasion and is then tie-wrapped in using existing holes :)

Haven't got any pics of it (and haven't tried the uploader either ;)) but if you're at NBO, have a look at my MY02 or you might even find me near it... :D

I've got a WRC type top grille to fit with the same mesh in but haven't got round to getting it painted yet :(

Yeah, its the red and white tube stuff, the bumper ismore likely to break before epoxy does

used no more nail on my bonnet scoop (why I meshed it i dont know), but definately does the trick

By far the best way of doing this is by using SMALL black zip ties from Halfords etc. That way, they're invisible, BUT the mesh CAN be removed if you ever need to!!
I did mine this way, and the upper one too, and it looks pretty good, even though I say so myself:D:

But what did you zip tie it TO??? The lower intake in particular is just a featureless piece of black plastic? Nothing there to zip tie to??

I'd drilled some small holes in the black plastic (2mm from memory) on my MY01. 3 per side of each hole. I then used black cable ties to hold the mesh in.

I had a bird strike which didn't get through the mesh. The only damage was a few broken cable ties. Easily fixed.

Sorry m8, didn't read your post properly, mine is the classic car, so it zip ties to the existing "grille" which is plastic.
I'd still be inclined to try zip ties for the reasons I gave, the last post before this tells you how, and sounds a good idea.
Personally, I'm all for mods, BUT: if you ever want 'em off, or back to standard...........................
