swapped out instrument cluster, odometer problem

hey mates,
I was just wondering how in the world I can get my actual odometer reading from the old one that pooped on me on this new instrument cluster?
Someone told me that the odometer reading is stored on the cluster and the ecu cannot do anything about the old mileage, it will only see what the new one says.
Is this true?
