Am looking at getting a dvd burner and have noticed that scan have some of the sony units in there 'today only' section for this weekend, but am unsure which are good burners and which aren't....


i had previously been told the sony's were very good and could do everything i would want, but theres a few versions so not sure which one was meant.

 

the sony is a fine DVD writer, supporting both the plus and minus format (DRU-500A). if you only looking for the plus format, then check out the NEC ND-1100.

 

Why do you want both formats?.I have a Toshiba SD-R5002 minus r format for copying films.The films work in my dvd player.£150.

Ive got the Pioneer A-04 its DVD-R and its not a bad drive, one of the better ones allegedly

Maybe a dual format DVD-R DVD+R might be a better option, ive had mine now for over a year, and afaik DVD-R is still widely available

Different situation.As long as i can get -r dvdr's then i can copy films to watch in my dvd player.So what if another format comes along.
Also in the long term well all be upgrading to faster and cheaper writers anyway.

 

big pockets do an NEC writer for £200 that is dual format

 

I have ordered the +/- NEC burner from Dabs.com, £190, but now they're telling me it's out of stock, grrr.

 

I have the Pioneer A05 drive. Superb, not one coaster yet
The OEM versions can be picked up for about £145.

 

I have a sony DRU-500AX (Same as "A" but retail boxed) got it a few months back from Japan for £200

Marvelous drive, would recommend to anyone, last time I checked though they where hard to get hold of, and pricey in the UK.
