Just wondering if anyone one here has had problems with the steering lock/ignition barrel. I've just bought a My00 and the things a pain to start, as it takes 4 or 5 attempts to get the steering lock off before the key will turn - this was never a problem on my previous Scoob a My96. Does it just want a drop of lubricant through the key hole in the barrel, or could there a potential problem with the steering lock. Any one else had this problem and come up with a quick fix.

Mine occasionally sticks, and it's due to it being parked in such a way that it puts pressure on the lock by wanting to turn it's wheels. It happens when I park where there's a bad camber etc.
It will release if you SLIGHTLY turn the wheel to take pressure off the lock.
Try that next time. If it doesn't work, take it to a dealer: it could have been forced at some time, and WILL let you down at the worst possible moment! Sod's Law!!:D:

Thanks for the reply Alcaza - but the problem occurs on level surfaces with the wheels in the straight position - thats why I was wondering whether the ignition barrels on later models require a drop of lubricant every now and again. Also I have had aclose look at the barrel and theres no sign obvious sign of any previous damage.

OK, understood, but I'd be a bit wary of putting oil into the ignition barrel. My experience of locks etc has led me NEVER to put any lubricant in except for dry lube: usually graphite.
Try giving a dealer, or IM a ring and ask for technicasl advice, see what they say. It still might have been strained.

dont bother puting lube into the lock/barrel, heard a guy sprayed wd40 in to the lock/barrel of a mercedes and the whole dash managed to go on fire.

I have the opposite problem with my MY94 wagon WRX.

When stopped and turned off engine, can't get the key out of the ignition!
Seems to not be able to push in the barrel / lock thingy so the key will not turn the last q/r turn and come out.

A lot of wiggling back and forward and it usuall;y then comes out.

Tried a spare key, same problem.

This igntion lock is the one that lights up with a green glowing collar when the key goes in, and beeps if door open etc. and key is put in.

If it needs a new ignition lock / barrel, any idea of cost?
Will UK dealers have them / supply them for an import?
Is it the sort of thing the specialist retailers on here would have or would I need a breaker?

If I had to change barrel can it be reset to use existing key, to save having to carry 2 keys?

Thanks

Neil

Wirerob, Kenny.C,

My P1 does the same thing. I usually have at least three goes to get the ignition key to turn.

I'd have thought that spraying WD40 onto the key and then trying the ignition might improve matters. Same goes for 3-in-1 oil or similar. Haven't yet bothered myself though.

Vindaloo.
