I have 17" * 7J Stilauto SR500's with 215/40/17 Bridgestone SO3's and the rears catch slightly on compression. Around town on my own it doesnt happen but it is more noticeable when passengers in the back or when on more 'interesting' roads or when pressing on a bit The n/s seems to catch more that the o/s. Only seems to catch on the plastic protection strip that edges the wheel arch? I don't know what the wheel offset is as they were on the car when I bought it. Anyone else had this problem? Should I remove the plastic arch protection strip that edges the arch? Anything else that might contribute to the problem?

 

Check your rear shocks to see if any paint has worn off. I had a similar problem when one of my wheels got a slight dent after driving down a pothole. It would knock on the nearside going round left hand bends. There was only about 2mm clearance between rim (215\40\17\7.5"rims) and the shock.

Thanks ED, the wheel is definitely catching on the arch trim not the shock absorber, the wheels have been checked for dents and are fine now

 

Try removing the arch trim, if this works, I would then get some waxy type rust inhibitor and apply liberally on the arch lip, just to be on the safe side.

I have worked out that the wheel offset is 48mm

Dimension A = 204mm


Dimension B = 150mm


Therefore 150 - (204 / 2) = 48mm

 

it should be stamped into the rear face of the wheel
your lucky tho mate
them white ones ive got are 35mm offset lol
will have fun fitting them me thinks lmao

 

There is a figure stamped on the rim which after I worked it out could possibly be construed to be 48
Not too clear though

you sure they are 48mm offset?

7x17 48mm I would of thought would fit fine without rubbing.

To illustrate what I mean, I'm running 8x18 with a 45mm offset and they only catch on the rear arches when hard worked round a roundabout. A slight bit of lip work i'm sure will stop this.

I'm running Speedline GT1's (ET48) with 215/40/17 Goodyear F1's and have exactly the same problem, definitely worse on the near side, it only catches when 4 up.

I cut the arch trim about the 11:00 position and just remove right hand piece when I know it will be a problem, the rest of the time it stays in place.

Thats interesting, I've just done the same with the arch trims, not been out to try it yet, should know after tomorrow's outing to the NW stages

 

RB5 17x7J wheels have a 52mm offset! Maybe there is a good reason for it?

 

The wheels don't catch any longer - just need the few mm that removing the arch trims provided
