I'm wondering about upgrading the CPU in my sons PC, it's a socket 7 P166 non MMX, what are my options ? - I seem to think the fastest the original pentiums went was 200 mhz (or was it 233) or can I go for an MMX to fit the socket 7.Any help appreciated.

To be honest, you'll probably not notice much difference from an upgrade as even 200MHz is considered 'slow' these days.

What's the reason for wanting to upgrade?

 

I got new motherboard and Duron 800 for £150 2 months ago. Probably better bang for your buck in the long term - and the motherboard will take up to 1500 MHz Athlon.

Although upgrading from a P166, you would need new RAM and probably a new case and PSU. In which case, either flog the existing box or keep it as a 2nd PC and buy a new one.

This will probably come down to motherboard support. Different CPUs need different voltages (even down to 0.1 of a volt).

Can you identify the make of the motherboard?

Any obvious part codes or identifiers on it? Is the PC a big brand such as a Dell or Compaq, or is it an OEM made from Generic parts?

A bit information and we can probably track down a manual or spec' sheet.

Thanks folks - the reason for upgrading is that the PC only cost me 90 quid in the first place, incl 17" monitor, and I quite like mucking about with the insides - once a mech tech always a mech tech. Currently it's running with 64 mb ram and I've also installed a sound card and extra hard disk - great fun !, and if it's only going to cost a few quid to pep it up a bit then why not ?. I've also got a 550 Dell that cost a packet but I have to say that the 90 quid PC gives it a good run for its money on most things and I'd like to keep it for a little while yet. If I spend time upgrading the PC it might keep me out from under the bonnet of my STi - bits for this are a bit dearer !!. I'll look at the motherboard and see if I can find out it's origin - I've been in the motherboard website before but I didn't know the that upgrading the CPU was so dependant on the motherboard. im guessing but a p200mmx or 233mmx if yer really lucky is the limit.
