Served them right (record companies)
Also, one other part of the process which has often got ignored is the retail outlets. Its these people that are making the extortionate prices out there.

HMV buy cd's for max £5, they then push em out for £15.99 sales.

No wonder people used napster.

I wouldnt like it is someone distributed my product for free.

I dont know why people think music should be free when they know little or nothing about the costs in producing it.

Saying that a Blank CD costs 99p is a bit pathetic....

Last recordable cd's i bought 100 by 700meg/80minute disks costing me 29 pence each, i don't use napster or anypart of the net for mp3's but i do like it for it's archival qualities 10 albums at a 192bit rate will fit nicely onto 1 cd and if the original does get damaged or stolen i still don't have to go and buy the same album again.

I would like to see record companys offering albums for sale on the net in larger quantities provided that the quality is on par with cd compression that most stuff i've seen used is 128 and is in my opinion of less quality than a cd

Admittedly, they always bought their stock in bulk, but you would expect them to pass the profits on to the buying public wouldnt you? Nope.

Even when they have those mad sales where they sell their CD's £10 for 2 or the like, they are STILL making a profit.

Craig,
I know for a fact. I worked there for a year I used to see their invoices all the time.

I have never bought as many music CD's since beginning my Napster career. I hear a tune somewhere and think "great, like it".

So I download on Napster and like it even more. However MP3 is no substitute for CD's to me. The quality is good but unless you have a CD Re-Writer you cant play them in the car etc etc.

So I then order the CD as well as having it in MP3 format - everyone is happy.

The sound quality of mp3s is very good. The problem is the poor quality of the sound card and speakers which are generally used to play mp3s using a PC. If you take a 160kbps mp3 and burn it onto an audio CD along with the original, the vast majority of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference when played on a hifi. Try getting yourself a decent sound card and connect it to your hifi. You will be surprised at the results.

Just anaddition to Merlins comments, if you're into minidisc, you can either get the sb live platinum + the live drive thingy which allows you to plug your mini disc straight in and record to that (plus go straight in the car if you have an in car md).

or if you own any recent creative card (sb live value etc) you can but a daughter card which will give you digital out, which will go straight to hi-fi or mini disc once again

as for costs, 1.5 hours to download 3 albums worth off napster via adsl with no call charges sounds good to me !

Chris, sod the pc, just get a seperate file servers, store the mp3's on there and arm yourself with zone alarm and or black ice defender.

you've got as much chance getting hacked just being on the net, nevermind napster.
I get more hacked ports when in irc than anything else !

I'm a big napster fan and use Windows Media Player to write MP3 albums directly to CD then copy those onto MD. I'd heard about the optical-out daughter board but I've never been able to find one. Anybody got any ideas where I can get one?
As for the pros and cons of Napster, well it is copyright theft and was never going to last BUT it has provided the music industry with a well earned kick up the ar$e. CD music is horrifically overpriced here in the UK (go to the states and see!); anything that may force prices down to a more realistic level gets my vote.
