I am getting my NTL cable modem installed on 9th. Does anyone know which modem NTL are suppling these days. Am i better with the USB version or the Ethernet version. I have a 3Com 10/100 card installed in my machine.

Dunno what the make and model is but it can do both ethernet and USB.

Ethernet is the better option of the two as it uses less PC power as far as I know.

 

I think you'll find that the NTL engineer will actually connect your existing Cable TV box to your ethernet card or a USB NIC if that is what you ask them to do, some of the areas do use a separate modem but I think they are stopping these.

Is that happening now Pete? I got mine fitted middle of Dec 2002 and still got the separate modem. Bugger if they connect to cable box as ours is downstairs and PC is upstairs.....

 

Think where you are / which NTL area serves you determines whether you have separate CM or link to STB.

Most of the CMs support both ethernet and USB. Which you use is a matter of personal preference, unless you intend connecting more than one PC to broadband, in which case I would goethernet and get a broadband router. IMO a better method than using ICS, as you can use any connected PC to go online without having to have one particular machine turned on

 

They would have been struggling with mine as I don't have ntl TV so no STB.

The modem is a Terayon unit and can be connected USB or Ethernet.
I currently run it USB into a port replicator and then to my laptop. In the next couple of weeks I intend to use the modems ethernet connection into a wireless router.
I wouldn't have thought there would be any difference in performace as both standards far exceed broadbands capabilties.

Not heard the STB thing before, everyone I know has a modem. Most people have the PC in a different part of the house than the main TV. Must be aa nightmare for the installers.

Had NTL fitted couple of weeks ago. Installed with modem to TV point.

Bought myself a Dlink Wireless router(22mbps), couple of wireless lan cards and bobs your uncle.

 

Mines connected to cable box weve got 20m cable running up stairs to router then another 20m to my pc in the loft(conversion bedroom)

As above Ethernet is the better option

Looks like they're supplying 'ntl:home' branded cable modems that aren't bigger than a couple of *** packets these days. When I got mine (~1 year ago) they gave me a Terayon that gets very hot
