My drop links come off

Pulled into Spender towers last night and there was a terrible grinding noise from the front offside as I stopped the Scoob.

It's not the pads down to the metal as they've got plenty left in them, so I thought I might have got a stone caught somewhere.

Went out this morning to investigate and before I took the wheel off (after checking for bearing play) I peered underneath.

The lower joint on the drop link had come adrift. It doesn't look as though it has anything other than an interferance fit to keep it in place. I lowered the jack, lined it up and tapped it back on.

A mile into my journey to work this morning I hear a thud as it came off again (confirmed upon arrival at work)

The car is a 93 WRX import and the drop link is metal.
Looks like they'll need replacing, but with what?

Mine started to knock on my 93 WRX. I tried to buy some others as I have Whiteline ones on the rear. couldn' find any so I made some rosejointed ones.

No. I have whiteline's on the rear but they don't make them for Jap cars that have metal drop links as standard on the front.

ooooer, I ordered some Whitelines from Powerstation this morning.............are they not going to fit?

Anyone got any other suggestions/replacements?

the whiteline products here have recently declined in quality, there's been quite a few cases of the rear droplinks snapping right in the center, i've had their front drop links for going on 1 year and 20k miles w/o any problems.

Why do you think the quality has dropped on these products? I was about to order some drop links but I think I shall wait for any new reports.

I've heard of rear drop links failing when the rear ARB has been uprated too. If the new ARB bushes are not greased correctly, or if the grease drys out, they can clamp the ARB increasing the load on the links.

I've not seen evidence of this, but heard of it reported from various Aussie sources - their fix is to strip the blue paint off the bar, regrease and refit.

Rally Colin,

Do they fit a 93 WRX import with alloy front suspension arms?

The ones that are on there at the moment, have(in effect)ball joints at each end.

Whitelines don't do the job properly (and the fronts are too short, by about 25mm).

Yes they are proper STI ones for the alloy arms. They are brand new.

Colin,

I'm removing wheels this weekend to check what's knocking so should be back to you ASAP. How quick can they be in my possession. MOT is booked for Wednesday 8th Jan, but that isn't set in stone
