Have you got any anti-virus running ? That can keep reseting the defrag.

You could download a prog. called "EnditAll" which closes down everything except windows system apps...this way nothing should interrupt.

Failing this get Norton Utils..It has "speed disk" which is much much much quicker than defrag..

windows scheduler, screen saver, and anti-virus software are great at making the defrag restart.

I defragged a single ata100 40gig ibm drive in around 20 minutes last night, so 10 hours would seem excessive.

It's also dependent on how regularly you run the defrag. If this is the first time in ages, it'll take longer.

Cool

what OS is it? if it is 95 or 98 then there is a bug in the defrag tool where it can not move files that are in use and just hangs, you need to get the ME version of defrag and load it into windows. If it is 2K then I can't help you.

As someone mentioned. Norton Ulilities 2002 has an excellent funnction called 'speed disk'
This not only defrags your harddrive but arrances the data according to usage/apps etc.

Available at a very competetive price via Kazaa/eDonkey2000 etc

Looks to me like Kaza is causing your problem, but best practice would be to close down everything, including any 'taskbar' utilities that might be running and causing any sort of disk i/o.
