Not for my Scooby, but my hot rod - I'm looking for a head unit I can mount totally hidden (doesn't suit the old jalopy) but operate remotely without crashing while I fiddle with the controls (does anyone use those TV type remotes on the move?). Ideally I'd want the sort of removable face panel you get on most head units but with a wireless connection so I could stick it to the dash with a magnet/velcro when in use.
Any ICE wizards got any ideas please?

Cheers, HotRod

One of my mates did this with a MK2 golf. Living in a crime prone area, he put his alpine hu in the glove box and extended the IR receiver onto the dash - so it could be controled with the unit totally hidden. Don't think it was too difficult either; you just have to be nifty with a soldering iron. The other is to create a stealth control panel that hides away - ie build it into the ashtray with a few minimal selection operation buttons. As i'm partial to the occasional packet or two of marly lights, the ash tray remains a sacred item in the dash, beaten only in necessity by the steering wheel.

Incidentally, did you know that all new volvos are built as standard without ash trays? They have to be ordered as an extra. %^&^%$s.

The mStation thiungumy has a wired remote that's about 4"x2", you could velcro that in place somewhere and then tuck it away when you're not using it. But unfortunately it only plays MP3s - no radio or CD. And you'll need an amp to go with it.

I've done the same with a competition setup that allowed me to use the remote outside the car.
You need an infrared resender, basically you have a small receiver on the dashboard that sends a signal to a transmitter that points at the ir receiver of the head unit.
I may actually have a spare one somewhere.

CM - were u in SPL then, or SQ?

The hassles a mate had getting IR to work properly through pimp tints made entertaining watching at every sound off

SQ with SPL
All the fun with RTA tests etc etc! My how I miss it (not!)
I had the same problem with pimp tints, which is why I came up with the infrared transmitter.
Mounted it under the empty tweeter grill on the dashboard and used the remote through the front window.
