Just speaking to a guy at work who has an Audi S3.....apparantly AMD are just completing an upgrade for the S3 that will give it 350 BHP - costs £5k

That would be a bit of a beast !

I recentlly heard of an S3 keeping pace with a 996 C4 upto 160mph, the story seemed very genuine and came from the Porsche driver who wanted to know how tunable these S3's are as he couldnt believe it kept up with him!!

Nice car the S3, very nice!!

 

Guy at work has a "standard" AMD chip & it flies - easily as fast as my STi4.
EVO mag has a superchipped S3 in the Driven section which they say is faster than their standard UK STi Impreza.

Much better build & interior too.

Yep nice cars those S3's. Got the 4wd and a nice turbocharged engine. The handling and engine note are a bit boring but these are all things that can be rectified with a few mods. Interior is also very nice as well and by all accounts the engine is quite tuneable. Only problem is they still seem quite pricey. The car has been out for ages and you still can't find decent low mileage ones for less than £17000. Good for depreciation for current owners but would ideally like t see them dip under the £15000 mark. Then I would consider one.

older models might now drop a little faster seeing as the revised S3 is now out (225 bhp etc)
EVO drove this model & said it was much better to drive than the older model.

Yeah Iam the same, Iam looking at new cars and wouldnt mind an S3, bit small but a nice car that can be tuned up. But 17k is steep, especially when you can get an S4 2.7 Bi-Turbo for similar if not the same money!

I also want one with under 30k miles but they are around 20k!, thats new car money mister Audi!!. Good thing is that depreciation shouldnt be to bad, residuals obviously the same.

But - have a look at an X plate S3 next to a new one, there is a lot of cosmetic difference, if I were to spend 18k on one I would feel a bit mythed every time I saw a newer one.

I will give it to January then Iam buying!!

 

You can import brand new S3's for about £22,000 now. That would be the way I would go but I can't afford one for the time being

 

The £5k is about right, I have been quoted £5.5 to upgrade my Tavia to 400bhp, includes a Quaiff diff in the price for me as I'm only 2wd. Im just trying to justify to myself that I really "need" 400

The 1.8T engine is very tuneable and there are conversions up to 450bhp with full TUV approval. Going beyond the 450 they have to bore it out to 2.0litre, but you can then go up to 550-600bhp. Cost of the 550 is approx £13k.

350bhp is the limit for the crank in the S3/TT 225 engine, to get to that yeah you are looking at 5k+ new turbo, manifold etc etc etc

not seen any times for these cars but would imagine they are freakin quick!

My TT is just a paltry 280 bhp/ 275 ft/lb

thing is that cost under a grand to get it to that and you are talking big money per bhp to get to 350!

I reckon just a chip and a full exhaust would give you those numbers, probably about £1200 all in, 'cos thats what I spent for a chip and an exhaust.

For my £5k I will get the following:

New E-proms in ECU, optimization of flow to intercooler, new turbo, exhaust manifold, wastegate, intercooler, fuel pressure regulator, injectors, piston rods, clutch, air filter, modification of air filter housing and charge air hoses and pipes oh and the LSD.

The next stage up adds fuel pump, camshafts, crankshaft, pistons, oil cooler, flywheel, air filter, extra engine mounts, modification of crank case breather, and porting of cylinder head to the above list.

But I fear that may be a tad OTT for fwd

 

Nice motors S3s, although £17k for a highish mileage one a few years old will get you a brand new Leon Cupra R, with the same engine, which are meant to be sharper to drive (I've driven a LCR but not an S3) even though they are only FWD.
Theres a few people chipping the LCR, but traction does become an issue going much over 250bhp with FWD, even with all the chassis tweaks and TCS gubbins they have.
Bloody fast car I'd imagine for the price.

 

I had two S3's yeah they are great cars, wrote the first one off as a woman pulled out on me whilst driving on a national speed limit road! Doh.

Looked into tuning options but as you say to tune Audi's is an expensive game! Chip alone is like £1100 smakers! The only downfall of the S3 is the Haldex system that controls the 4WD system. Its pants and basically i didn't drive without switching traction control off!

Anyway im glad that i now have the scooby. Better car imo.

Only problem is that they are in Germany - but their work is the absolute nuts.

They have a 'UK' dealer - Scotts Audi of Sloane square / Scotts motortune - worth speaking to them, or buying a s/h nothelle off them.

They also do a 2.7 turbo conversion for the Audi S3.

Any of the 1.8turbo VAGs can be tuned to over 200BHP for under a grand... Jabbasport are the UK experts, they are VAG nuts themselves. Best bet at the moment has got to be the Seat Leon R, at full UK list price of less than £18K you get: 225BHP, Recaros, 18inch wheels, A/C, CD etc.

People I know who have gone to over 300BHP go through clutches every 10K miles and the drive chain in general needs to be treated gently. Having said thet the owner of Jabbasport has a Goof that puts out over 400BHP.

 

Not quite..... There are a multitude of versions of the 1.8T, some seem to struggle to break 165, some can go to 4-500bhp, depending on the details. Jabbasport would certainly be my choice for any 1.8T owner to get the best from their engine.

Thats just your opinion, tho you'll get no arguments from me (less than £400 for a rolling road custom remap - 222bhp, 231lb ft, I'm *very* happy) Jabbasport certainly seem to be amongst the best in the country.

AMD however, are a different kettle of fish.

 

ianc; of course yes that's my opinion this is a froum but Jabba (as you seem to know) have a good word of mouth reputation in certain sectors of the vaste VW / VAG scene.

so tell me which? and why? of the current 1.8Ts can't be easily tuned to over 200BHP, I'm intrigued (sp?).

funny thing is some of the 150BHP VW ones turn out to be 180 anyway... bit of a bonus

 

I went to a certain TV show hosted at a certain rolling road day where there was a Jabba sport MK4 golf with 330 odd bhp, all ill say is SMOKIN as thats what it did, smoke.... not the sign of a good tuner if you ask me.

I'm not naming names but some tuners care more about engine longevity than ultimate peak figures.

 

Exactly Turboboost - nail firmly on head. 350-400 RELIABLE bhp from the TT225/S3 lump (which is considerably different to the 150/180 Engine) is acheivable - my lump's the first. I've seen some very impressive looking figures for a standard 150 lump...except I don't expect those engines to last. Simply bolting on a huge Turbo to see what it'll do is one thing - but selling it as viable road-going product? Nah.

 

Which is why for that sort of power you shopuld be upgrading the internals, as Jabbasport have done on their golf.

 

Well they didn't to start with, it must have blown up at some point. That was a standard Golf 150 engine with a big turbo strapped on, when it was first on the scene.
I hope they make customers aware that they need the internals uprated as well, in which case the prices for the conversions will go up a lot.

 

Well although there are even multiple versions of the 150 engines, they certainly stressed it to me when I discussed what it would involve.

Some 150's (some ibiza's it seems) are struggling to break 160\170, not sure if they've worked out that one yet, some are happiest around 185\195 (those with the smaller injectors) and then some seem to go around 220 with little complaint, no detting, no silly turbo pressures etc. The VVT head responds better to tuning, and the second K03 (b?) is better also. People just need to realise that although the 1.8T is a strong engine, they are not all the same to start with and big power *will* cost big money.

 

Like has been said alrady the TT/S3 engine is significantly uprated over the golf variant!

cant mind they have done to the internals though, they sure have strapped on big turbo's though
