Hi all, I have a query which I have tried to find the answer to through the search function, no luck

Anyway, I have two front tyres with full tread on, and two rears which need replacing!

I have heard a rumour that because it is a awd system which is running, I need to change all four tyres to keep the front in check with the back. Has anyone else heard this? Any light on this matter would be very much appreciated as I would much rather not change two perfectly good tyres

Hi mate, I'm not sure but if it helps, I've never changed all four at the same time, either 2 front or 2 rear yes... As it happens I've just the minute had 2 new fronts....

Hey thanks for the speedy reply, yes it does help, so you have never changed all four in one hit? Always had awd? Im probably going to stick to the same tyre or as near as dammit, and the tread on all four wheels will be very similar as the fronts look like new so...... I have asked around a few different people and have been told I should be ok to do just the two rears.

Yeah mate AWD Impreza Wrx the rears last a lot longer than the fronts...

How long have you had it? Its possible the previous owner rotated fronts to rear.

Just replace 2,,put the fronts to the rear & the new ones on the front.

Read your manual.

It tells you to rotate tyres to even up wear, and to change all four at once.

12 years of impreza ownership. 4 different cars(uk classic, type ra, type r and new age sti) and found I always always needed to replace all 4 at the same time. Never needed to rotate front to back either. Mind you I don't let them get below 3mm before changing

This is the thing iv not had the car for very long, so the rears were already shot when i got hold of the car? So cant really rotate them as the are past their best!
I will replace all four if i have to, to stop any further problems developing but i really dont want to, and wouldnt know what to do with the other two which are like brand new? Bar selling them of course.
While i have you all any recommendations on tyres? Or just stick with the brodgestones? I find they dont last too long? Had them on my r26 megane.

I've had a classic, bugeye & now hawk sti. With each car I've only ever changed & needed to change one axle at a time. I too had heard all the stories of needing to change all 4 tyres at once etc but I've never blown any diffs or suffered any other related failure as a result of changing only 1 axle at a time. I had my scoobs for 1 1/2yrs, 2 3/4yrs and 3yrs & counting respectively. Obviously this is only speaking from my own experiences.
