Default Advice: Cosworth AP 6pots.. what to do for the best

I've picked up some lovely Cosworth AP 6pots ... thinking I'll swap them for the 4pot Brembos on my hatch..... as they'll be better(?)

[/url]

Now.....I know they're not new, so...
Do I have the calipers checked and refurbished so I know they are all perfect.. or keep as they are?
Do I replace the pads?
Do I replace the Rotors? (the guy said he's bough them new two years ago... they don't look smooth on the outside face, but look to have life still left in them

Or is it a case re sell them on to someone who'll get more use out of them than me????

I've PM'd Ian to see what he thinks.... are new rotors stupid money or are there other option that don't cost the earth but will suit me (I don't do track days and do 3k miles a year)

Hi. Me personally, if your keeping them, I would refurbish so they are good as new. I would let the pads and discs wear naturally before replacing. Make use of them.

Ultimately if your selling then ignore the above.

Thanks

i will put them on car to check them
2years old kit should be good for another few without refurb
then You can buy new rotors and pads for around 600
with 3k miles a year those discs and pads should last 3 years or more

thanks guys, is there any way of seeing if they are warped?

and the un evenness on the rotors shouldn't be too much of a issue?
as you run your finger/nail over them and they feel a bit ridged, but looking at the photo the ridge seems to correspond to the 'slash/cut' patterned of the groove.

is a refurb not too expensive??

Stick em on and see how you go... not like it's a massive job or particularly complicated, bread and butter for your average spanner monkey... if there's a problem (which I doubt there will be on 2yr old AP's) it's easy enough to whip them off again... not like it's your daily, so time isn't an issue.

If you're that worried, have them fitted by a Subaru specialist (extra cost) no doubt they could give them the once over before fitting, or know a decent machine shop to skim the rotors should they require it.

Just a thought, but I seem to remember that you run 17" winters? So you need to sell them to me as they won't fit half the year!

Its all good Don.
The pads look quite full.

Just concerned about how the discs look. But as said above I could run and bed in, then when they wear swap them then.

With brakes its the only thing stopping you, so need to be working properly.

My AP 4 pot CP6600 (or something like that) were 18 months old when I got them, 4yrs 35k miles set and a half of pads later (ds 2500) the rotors (godspeed) aren't pretty but they'll still last the almost new set of pads that are with them... so at least another 15k... which for you would be 5yrs.

as I've found out today when i went to fit, there have a carrier on them that is for a NewAge.
So unsure about a classic. may be like me, I'd need to get a new fitting bracket/carrier to get them to fit.

I can't be bothered to sort it out soo will sell on.

Hi
They are the same fitment , the only difference in the cars , is the change in wheel pcd in 2004/2005 , to fit a classic you would need another set of holes drilled into your hubs , very easy to do.
Cheers Ian

i guess they're 356mm rotors? 356's do fit in some 17's, so worth trying before you sell the wheels.
to check for warp on the rotors you can use a dial indicator
you need 100pcd bells, you can use the same rotors with them. or get the bells drilled out with 100pcd holes
if selling i may be interested, PM me a price

the garage that were fitting them said the carrier wasn't right for teh hatch and they couldn't get these on my car. Also they said the small piston should be at teh bottom and the way they are set up now had the nipple on the wrong side, so they said they can swap that over.. if I could get a carrier that fitted the hatch.

Hence me looking to move on to someone who can either fit to their car or alter it to fit.
I've not the skill or time or can be bothered now.

sounds like a EVO kit , what size is the centre bore on the bell , to be an Impreza one it has to be 58mm , it looks larger than that , EVO ones are 69mm

Cheers Ian

Hi
All the year Impreza's use the same brackets , yes the small piston should be at the bottom of the caliper , these calipers are called trailing , the EVO has leading caliper so on the front of the hub , and will have the small piston at the top of the caliper.

Here is one of our 355mm EVO bells , the centre hole and spacing between the wheel stud hole and centre hole look the same .

Our impreza bell for comparison

The disc fitted my car fine.
the caliper didn't.
I wonder ifbit had been setbuo for a front fitting facing caliper and not rear fitting one. As that would make sense why the small piston is the other way up.

Hi
Yes the evo disc will fit as they have the same wheel stud pattern , you need to check the centre hole diameter.
The bell offset looks to small for an sti one , but looks about right for an evo one.
Im thinking its an evo kit as the discs fit on but the calipers and brackets don't.
Measure the centre bore of the bells , and the bolt spacings on the brackets where they bolt to the hub , and I'll let you know uf its an impreza kit or not.
Dont want you selling the kit on to someone with an impreza , then they come back to you selling something it isnt , if its an evo kit , at least you can sell it as that.

No impreza has the calipers on the front of the hub , they are all on the rear , and the brackets will fit all years , from 1993 to now

who I bought them off had them on a HawkEye though, so he must of had them on his car fitting.
Hence he sold them as off a 'Newage'

If they fitted a hawkeye , they will fit ALL Impreza's , if they don't fit on your car , they won't fit any Impreza.
I'd like to help you determine what you have , to save you the grief selling it as something it isn't and any hassle after.
If it's an EVO kit , you wouldn't have any problem selling it
Cheers Ian

Was gonna say, the front calipers on my Blob are from a hatch. Not the first time I've done that either.

I bought these brakes off Phil and fitted them to my blob. Had to drill the bells but otherwise went straight on .
I can tell you all the hole centres on the caliper brackets do not fit hatchback sti hubs as I tried them myself
Cheers Phil for absolute bargain
