Subaru in dire straits?

Default Subaru in dire straits?

Subaru’s UK “sales” fell by nearly 50% in July compared to a year ago. Having said that only a few manufacturers are doing well, I've been told.

Also the 2.5s are haemorrhaging money like nobody’s business – a 25% drop in value in less than a year. The trade obviously don’t like them. Why?

What next?

Second hand scoob's are relatively worthless now mate. I paid nearly Ł10k for my MY00 classic last july and the trade in value now is Ł3250

i just got an 05 blobeye wrx this explains why stealers are being so tight at the moment the ones i visited wont budge on anything including PPP pack, least i can get it for is Ł1600, i have seen posts on here stating it has been supplied and fitted for as little as Ł950

So I reckon it aint Subaru or 2.5 Sti at fault - its the economy at large

we r tightening our belts as spenders

Sounds like another good reason to buy euro import - Ł21k WRX - 25% = Ł15750 in one year.

New WRX from motorpoint 5 months ago - Ł15700

Question is - what to spend the Ł50 on?

I think a lot of their problems are down to image and also their now poor reputation, warranty anyone?! I know lots of people who have had very bad experiences with local dealers too. I would never buy a Subaru again after my experience. Took my money to Porsche and now BMW.

I also think the Impreza is on its last legs in its current form, the interior is a good 10 years behind Ford / Vauxhall and 15 years behind BMW/Merc etal.

I think their overall package is now rather shoddy and I hope that they sort it out. The new 08/09 cars should hopefully do this.

They then just need to sort IM out! Ideal solution would be for FHI to drop IM for Saab to take over just as the new car comes out.

again i reckon poor marketing - how many people actually realise you get free fuel on a scooby nowadays? Probably not many




my mate says there are plenty of people willing to bite my hand off for my 06 STi

again i reckon it is the economy at large that is causing the problems

It's not just Subarus. We sold a 15 month old Saab 9-5 Vector Estate with Hirsch Stage One 210bhp conversion, and got Ł11350 for it. That's Ł16000+ depreciation - or around 60%! It was fully loaded (leather etc) but not even the Saab dealer who sold it to us would bid for it.

Depreciation on our 05 STi UK PPP's running at around 35%.

Mind, my Bro in Law's just sold his 525i Auto Sport Touring for Ł10K cash. Couldn't find anyone willing to pay more. That's Ł34K's worth of car... I reckon Bil's right: it's the economy.

Cash is king. When I was looking at cars discounts of up to a grand could be had on the advertised prices (5-6k) even before going to see the car. Only 2 out of 20 owners had sold their cars when I called.

IMHO it's pointless buying a new age car for 20-30k when good classics can be had for a fraction of the money

Thats why anyone who has a good Classic (like me) would be off their rocker to buy a new one .................. they offer nothing different!

Subaru have been killed by their own great success, which was the Classic Impreza - they don't make 'em like they used to and no-one will pay the money for a lesser car.

your comparing a year old wrx to a new import you need to compare it to a year old import so drop another 25% of the Ł15700 thats more of a fair comparison think it's about Ł11775ish.

Ok, fair enough but my point is you will never lose as much deprciation in Ł terms on a Euro WRX compared to a UK WRX.

Having sold a Euro Import Hyundai Coupe to buy the scoob, I got equivalent trade values to a UK car.

You are right Pete - they are far superior cars now

I know as I have owned both

PS War may be a very bad thing for individuals and countries - it has done wonders for my gold stocks though

Maybe Subaru are doing something wrong here? Why can`t they offer a better spec in the UK as they do in Japan etc? Who knows? Is this why folk prefer buying the JDM?
I honestly don`t know the answer. But giving away free fuel isn`t at all a good showcase as every man and his dog knows that Subarus love petrol
I bought a 52 STi for 19k, two years ago, dread what to think its worth now.
But as its a Scoob, priceless

Keep your classic in good condition, the value won't fall too much more should steady off until they start to get a bit rarer.

You can now pick up a decent evo 4 for about 5 grand, the earlyer ones are hit hard too. It's just a bit of a slump.

Lets hope it doesn`t spiral downwards even further.
I was going to invest in an 06 STi, but doing the maths just didn`t add up on current depreciation etc.
I`ll keep my STi and upgrade when funds allow

I'm so glad that I gave up my place for one of the first P1's into the UK.

At the time it was Ł31,500 for a standard P1!!!

One blindingly obvious reason that no one has mentioned is that there is no diesel Subaru. A lot of people will call me boring and come up with phrases like "you only live once" but there is simply no sense in buying a car whose performance can only be used 5% of the time if you are lucky. The majority of cars now sold in the UK are diesels. All manufacturers are suffering but it's the lack of a diesel that is really killing them.

Totally agree, why don`t Subaru do a diesel?
But not the Impreza
They could do a Forester quite easily which would sell.
Give Land Rover a run for their money.

I am a diesel convert since buying a Golf TDI and I'm seriously looking at selling my Forester for a diesel estate of some kind!!

Did anyone honestly buy any new(ish)car and think it would retain any value,most cars only retain around 50%ish in three years so the more you pay the more you lose thats the reality.The new 2.5 was voted engine of the year and I can agree its got good low rev torque and still goes like the clappers and i will not regret having one.
