(For our colonial cousins, that's a gud whey of eggsplanening it
)
I had a discussion about this with some American colleagues yesterday, and they came up with the excuse it's better to claim Irish descent than Polish as there's more dumb Polack jokes than dumb Irish jokes

everytime i speak on cod4 i get asked are you irish? iam scottish!!!!!!! so when i hear irish folk speak i ask them if they have ever been asked if they were scottish by the americans they say no. what is it with americans and the fascination with the irish?
I remember reading once that there are more people who claim to be Irish in New York than in Ireland !
For some reason I think yanks think being Irish gives them some culture and roots, and gives them a reason to drink pi55 weak beer with green colouring in it once a year.
I'll bet 9/10 of the so called Irish in the US couldnt point out where Ireland is on a map if you asked them ( most Americans cant find the US on a map as they arent used to seeing it with the other countries joined to it ).

Of course all Americans are haf Irish.
Sure when us bog men had the bit potatoe famine, all the clever paddies left on a bit boat.
So therefore logic says that the majority of americans have great great great something or other relations in Ireland.
I particulary like the way the dopey bollox's ask you "Do you know Mrs Thingymabob from Cork" when they here you're Irish

Around 12% of the total American population, i.e. 36m, have reported Irish ancestry in a 2006 survey.
The total percentage of Americans believed to have Irish heritage is thought to be as high as 35%. In comparison Austalia is thought to have around 40% of the population having Irish heritage.
At least 23 American presidents have some Irish heritage of the 44 American presidents to date including:
Roosevelt
Truman
Kennedy
Johnson
Carter
