Default Best practise to replace power steering fluid

Hi guys

I am back in the Subaru world for the third time, now a proud owner of a Jen sti version 3. My question is should you really have the power steering fluid changed on a 21 year old car?
Bit sure if normal , but at low speeds turning in, it feels like the steering wants to come and go a little in weight. I have a Cusco factory fitted rear diff if that helps. Thinking it might be a good ideal in first instance to get that power steering fluid changed.

good to see ysee ur thoughts guys

Good man!!
is it normal for the older impreza sti to have a varied feel at low speeds? Everything seems to be ok mechanically but interested to hear people's opinions. Thanks !

I did mine a few months ago, the stuff that came out was black and very thin, I thought the pump was on its way out because if the noise it was making, new fluid and it's now silent. I used a big syringe and a bit of hose to suck some of the old stuff out, topped up with new, lock to lock a few times with the engine running and then repeated until what was coming out was the same colour as what was going in.

Hi my impreza had a noisy pump sound and the weighted feel coming on and off while driving the fluid was near enough black

It was clear to me the life of the additive which is put in the fluid was naffed so replaced it since then all is jolly well
Hope these pics help pal

Used this suction method while adding from top no air whatsoever when started this way

Gave the reservoir a good clean there's a little filter there on the newage

Make sure you use the correct fluid that has the correct additive in

Oh my god. What a difference. Seriously impressive. Smooth as hell at all speeds now, especially lower ones. Quiet as a mouse too. This is something that should be part of everyone's maintenxad plan when the car gets to a "mature" age

Glad it worked ok, next easy job is clutch fluid, again mine was black and looked like it hadn't been changed in the 18 year life of the car, it's not as critical on the new age as the reservoir sits a bit higher but as it sits next to the turbo on the classic the peddle can go solid sitting in traffic if it hasn't been changed.

Ha ha ornate did cross my mind. That is literally the last fluid for me to change that I have not done in past month. I'll change that fluid when the clutch eventually gives way!!

I'm no expert, but I've used ATF dextron III in the PS of my legacy and it's worked fine. Just get rid of as much of the old as possible and run the pump until the fluid goes clear.
