I have searched the interweb and forum for some clues as to what is on my bench!
I recovered my car from a mechanic who failed me in a big way.
The original engine was not only missing but also the replacement engine I bought and I was supplied with a engine with no documents or history.
I am in the process of a full tear down and rebuild but cannot workout the EJ20 variant.
The clues are thus:
DOHC with AVCS
Cam runs on bucket that is specific to gap, no shim on or in.
open or semi open deck (pic of this)
Common coil pack that is on manifold, off center.
Inlet manifold is red but I suspect this may have been painted!
The block is stamped EJ20BUG with 270074 serial number.
Cam belt adjuster is piston type pushing wheel not integrated type.
I need to order the gaskets and seals so need the engine type.
I have a rebuild kit but half the parts are wrong including belt tensioner.
Help greatly appreciated.

Serial number on block case.



Ok its a EJ20 somthing...





AVCS type cover, I cant find the correct gaskets.



Will ultrasonic clean.







AVCS version



No shims, Adjustment with buckets.









Suspect manifold.



Does this mean its a yellow injector?

So looking at your photos, you have :

JDM (japanese domestic market) center thrust open deck block ( version 1 to 4 ). It has the extra casting rib onto of the block behind the EJ20 and by the coolant cross over pipe outlet.
If you take some pics of the piston crowns, can identify what year.

Inlet Manifold is Version 5~6 (1999~2000).

Heads are Version 7 Single AVCS ( valve codes should be something like ID3 and ED3 )
Has selective shim buckets so you change the bucket to alter the valve clearance.

Many thanks Mick.
I hope to get the pistons out this weekend as stripping the block now so will post pics then.
Trying to give the engine a birthday, new pumps, gaskets, belts, pullies, bearings and I think new rings will be enough as the bore is looking good.
My biggest challenge is identifying the spares.
Do you think the engine has had the heads swapped at some time then?

Quick pics while the block is still together, is this enough?

Left Piston crown after quick clean, was oily.



The left one is now spare as does not fit this engine. I need a new right one.

Should I get the block skimmed while it apart?
I will do the heads that actually look cleaner.
Worried about the corrosion in the water jacket to cylinders.

The standard size 'dogbone' pistons confirm the block is from a Version 1~2 (1994~1995).

Always good to have a light skim to the deck faces to clean up any distortion ( standard block half height is 201.00mm so you can check if it has been skimmed in the past and most of the corrosion and scale in the water jackets can be removed by aquablasting or a similar process.

And if you change the timing belt tensioner mounting bracket from one off a Version 5 onwards car, you can use the later single bolt tensioner you have bought.

Default Pick and Mix

Thanks for the thorough feedback.
Should I be worried that this engine is actually 3 engines?
Its the heart of the car and if I could have bough a new one I would have but I am also ok to put the hours in to rebuild.
Not looking for monster power but would like to be in the high 200s.
Is it really so easy to pick and mix for these engines?
I am also worried that the gearbox may not be compatible as seems to have a different bolt pattern.
I found this cam belt bracket to use the new tensioner, is that enough to swap over cam belt with the different heads or did the belt stay the same?
