does anybody run budget tyres on their pride and joy if so what bhp are you running? what brand? and what are they like?

I am running eagle f1's at the moment there spot on but my friend needs 4 new tyres for his remapped wrx hawk in 18", he just bought a house and is skint and will be driving like a old women for the foreseeable future.

no need to waste your time and say good brands are better etc etc, i know just looking for feedback for a mate any reviews would be welcome.

you only get what you pay for and unfortunately he knows that a Scooby is expensive to keep on the road ....

a wrong choice could mean more than a hole in his pocket !!!

One of the best tyres you can get for a scooby up there with the F1s etc etc IMO

 

I never said anything about the verdies....I run goodyear eagle f1 the point I am making is your mate buying budget tyres could make a wrong choice

tyre choices are down to how you drive and get the car set up and not just what people recommend... if you look at tyre tests that don't always use high powered cars do they !!!

 

I've used Vred US for 6 years and they are spot on, the best tyre I have used

If he can afford £250 for cheap tyres, why can't he afford £350 for good tyres?

If he can't afford £350 for tyres, sell the car and buy someting cheaper to run

 

exactly the point I was making... only thing that keeps the car on the road is tyres so no way use budget ones...cannot afford to run the car as you say don't use it simple as that

 

The point I was making is that at the price verdies are budget tyres

TBH I would recommend a good 'true winter tyre' for the next few months then a change to a summer tyre eg. F1, verdies etc, but sometimes budget doesn't allow for this, so as a good all round alternative I'm sticking with the VUS"s

 

Agreed with all above - I struggle to understand why people will even consider putting ditchfinder tyres on a relatively high power car! It doesn't matter how carefully he drives if another road user ***** up and he has to take evasive action, why risk it? If he is that skint, borrow £100 for the sake of putting some decent tyres on ffs. Don't scrimp on tyres or brakes

 

also depends where you live as in do you drive in snow and ice ???

I used the vred US for 2 winters and the were great, I never got stuck in snow and never felt unsafe , even in a car park with 200mm snow I was clearing the snow in spaces for people in 'normal' cars to park in

Just bought a set of 4 Falken winter tyres, never bought their winter tyres before but had a couple of sets of 452's and found them to be a very decent tyre for the money, the winters weren't the cheapest on offer, actually they were about 8 quid a corner more expensive than the next best option but I went for them because I know the brand to be a decent one.

Also bought a set of Momo M3's a year or so ago for the scoob and they were a very good tyre in the wet or dry, just gripped all the time.

P.S, I'm an advocate of good quality tyres, but I also think you don't have to spend an absolute fortune, just do your research.

 

You can get cheap tyres that are cheap, and you can get good tyres that get good reviews that are a good price

 

I had a set of 452's on a 170bhp 306 d-turbo, they were fantastic, never lost traction and always felt planted and inspired confidence

 

Regardless of the car whether it runs 60 bhp or 600 bhp 2 things you never scrimp on is tyres and breaks.

Your only contact with the ground is the rubber wrapped around your wheels.

 

 

As above tyres play a very important part as they are your only point of contact to the road...My advice is to fit the best tire as you can comfortably afford to fit and you should be fine,Budget tyres are just that...Budget!,Just think of a no frills product and you should understand completely,the "bare minimum" in their make up and build quality,I guess that they would be Ok for certain driving styles at average speeds and dry road conditions on normal road cars but for a performance car...NO!.SJ.

 

This, Goodyear F1`s used to be in this category.

 

Landsails are good for the money....but...

Like with a lot of low-end tyres...even well known/top brands they cheat (for example Dunlop Sportmaxx which is Dunlop's budget sports tyre)....the first 20% of the tread depth has all the sipes and grooves so wet and damp grip is good.

But as soon as you pile on some miles all the sipes and cross grooves wear away and all you are left with is the three/four main grooves...fine in the dry, lethal in the wet....

Attached are two pics..one is a brand newish budget tyre with 7mm tread and the other is with 5mm tread...both are the same make/model tyre...

not a lot of reviews or info out there about them but i've run sessanta's before and they were good, running eagle F1 assy 2's at the minute and they've been excellent but they've just about had it now.

On my 998cc daily sh@t box I use Budgets, less than 10 miles a day mostly in traffic and no quick driving at all.
On the Subaru I buy Premium tyres. After many reviews, personal experience from people, write ups and past experience is all taken into account.

I had so.some budgets that were my v3 wrx there were pretty good in the wet. They gripped in heavy wet I was really surprised!! And braked well in the wet also.

Maybe it was luck

But rule of thumb as said before fit the best you can afford.

 

I had T1R's fitted [on my blob wrx] and in the dry they were great, but in wet roads they were poor. They get good reviews from the lighter classics, but poor reviews from heavier newage drivers

I always recommend vred US, I have used them for 6 years and they have been faultless in any situation. The only other tyre I recommend to people and the ony other tyre I would try is Goodyear F1 Asym, and that is number 2 in the list

Looking at how many miles have been driven on those tyres, for me to have the third place tyre fitted and only recommend the second place tyre, my opinion is backed up by reviews over millions of miles!

 

anyone tried rainsport 3's?

 

I had rainmax on my last work van and they were great, I don't know how they compare to rainsport 3's though
