Default Time for a clutch me thinks - suggestions please

Had a great drive on the roads around North Somerset - house sitting for a friend. Came across a 25% uphill gradient and the dreaded smell of slipping clutch wandered into the cabin. I'm never one to wait for a clutch to fail, so I need to replace in the near future. Can't complain - it's done well over 50K with upgrades going through it.

It's an 02 wrx bug wagon, running around 320/320 ish. No big plans at the moment for a six speed or further power, so just after a 5 speed clutch and possibly a lightened fly wheel (I see many do a package deal).

Any recommendations welcomed

I shall ring the usual suspects - Aztec, Lateral, DDM etc. Just wondering about any personal recommendations really.

Thanks for the offer, but a bit like an engine build, I'd rather get one out of the box, you know what you are getting and there's come back if it pops!

I have heard good things about the AP's. I really do want a standard feel and no unearthly judder.

Cheers for replies.

Current Exedy clutches from the right places have a anti-judder friction plate which makes it nice and smooth to drive. Coupled with a lightweight forged flywheel it would make for a very nice upgrade and could take more power than you currently have should you wish to upgrade your car further.

I'd just go straight to AP - having had 2 supposedly anti judder stage 1 exedys!

i did a little research a while ago into this,
i have a 04 sti and am planning to mildly mod it upto 380ish bhp.
most people told me an exedy pink box with lightweight flywheel was the way to go.
i wanted as near to oem pedal feel as i could get.
cant comment on what its like until its fitted monday, but i brought it from aztec above for an excellent price and it arrived today as promised, and even made my mrs moan when the delivery man gave her the box as she could hardly lift it due to it being so heavy lol.

Tommy: You'll love it.

Have barely had any problems with the current Exedy clutches we've supplied since they were updated some time ago (and we supply a fair few!).

Have seen more than a few occasions of an AP clutch having ripped it's centre out:

Would always choose Exedy myself and they are by far the most popular for Scoobs.

There will always be bad examples of all brands of clutch.

It would be good to hear how you get on with it - post back once you've had a play.

Just an update the exedy clutch and lightweight flywheel i brought from aztec was fitted today.
I had it fitted by a specialist who said exedy clutches are a very good choice.
Ill be honest i cant notice any difference in the way the engine revs due to having a lightweight flywheel fitted. but have only driven the car once.
The clutch feels slighty heavier than the oem one and bites a little more agressive but its still ok.for normal driving.

just do a little research on the various subaru forums and ask a few specialists.
while some people will have differing opinions,an uprated exedy pink box was the most popular choice for a lightly modded car.
i chose a new flywheel as the specialist who fitted mine said its a good idea to skim the flywheel upon fitting a new clutch to eliminate judder, but if the flywheel isnt scored or marked you can get away without skimming but you cant tell the condition until gearbox and clutch is removed.
as i needed the car back the same day i brought a new flywheel for piece of mind so i know it wont judder when refitted but if you dont need the car back you can wait to see if yours is scored and needs skimming.
i honestly cant notice a lot of difference with the lightweight flywheel but after a few drives ill let you know.

There lots of posts lately about people slagging of dealers etc so im going to give some positive feedback.
firstly aztec performance
i emailed about a price match and they emailed back within 10 mins and confirmed a great price. then i explained i needed within 3 days as my car was booked in for the fitting, to which the reply was there was no flywheels in stock until tommorow but promised to send out before fitting day. then emailed to confirm despatch.
all received next day no problems so i would recommend and use again without doubt.
secondly northants subaru.
fitted clutch flywheel and a few other odd jobs, all done at a reasonable price and completed same day and good knowledge of imprezas so will use again for servicing etc.

Quick update - bought the exedy clutch and light weight flywheel from Bob at Aztec. Great service and easy transaction.

Finally had it fitted with a local garage (6 hours to fit) and went for a spin today. Great pedal feel; the same, if not slightly lighter than standard. No judder at all - I was worried after the negative press about endemic judder with these clutches. Very smooth and great bite. Definitely more eager to rev, but nothing that goes beyond feel I suspect. Overall, very pleased and would recommend Bob's products and prices based on my experience.
