Default Best road I've driven

MornIng all,
I've just got back from 8 days away with work, I've been out on HMS Astute doing testing and trials.
The point here is that to get onboard I had to drive up the the Isle of Skye from Cumbria and from Loch Lomond onwards the road is superb. From there it's over to Glencloe, to Fort William, Invergarry and Kyle of lochalsh. Even though I was in Avis's finest ford focus the drive was great, views stunning and didnt get stuck in any heavy traffic. Also saw 1 Scooby just north of Fort William, a white classic with rally spots on the front.
It's a road I'll have to take the scoob on when she's back on the road. Has anybody driven the route before?

Some quick snaps I took on my phone camera.

And HMS Astute

I know this road very well and it is as you say superb... we've been taking our bikes up there to fort augustus every year for the past five years.. roads are in great condition and local plod never show their faces!! isle of sky TT is also a bikers favourite...

on the subject of great roads... down here in the north-east.. newcastle-kielder-newcastleton-longtown and back home is an amazing road for scoobs... miles and miles of fast flowing corners... no better way to do in a tank of petrol!!

Your right. Didn't see a police car or speed camera for miles and miles.
The only drawback I can think of with that road is the lack of SUL at some of the petrol stations. But as long as you fill up at Fort William then you should be ok.

Driven it before as well, but in an Astra sporthatch thingy (the 3 door version from a couple of years ago). Was a rental car and wish i had the scoob up there!

Stunning roads though, there's plenty of them hidden away in the mountains

Looks stunning. Great photos.

On a similar note, anyone like so suggest the best roads in mainland Europe? Or maybe a good guide?

I love the A82 but sometimes when you are doing 50-60 taking in the glorious scenery cars/bikes wanting to do 100mph get on your nerves a little. Great in the winter though when nobody is about and it feels like you've driven into a fantasy film.

Beautiful part of the world when you first reach the Highlands. Real shock to the system when you first pass 'Doune' due to the fact Britain is far more beautiful than you knew.

Search for Stelvio Pass in Italy/Switzerland border,Col De Turini,
Davos to Stelvio via Bormio,San Bernardino Pass, these are known from Top Gear.

GrossGlockner in Austria,Trollstigen in Norway.

In UK is few which you must drive like

A970 Lerwick to Sumburgh,

Black Mountain Pass,

Tal-y-Bont to Nant-y-Moch Reservoir and on to Devil's Bridge,

A4067 from Sennybridge over Black Mountain/Brecon Beacons to Ystradgynlais

I've seen a couple of scoobs in the base there, think a bugeye was for sale in the car park last year sometime.
Got on at Skye in lovely sun, then alongside in Faslane to be met by rain, should have expected that !!

You should be able to swindle a visit onboard if you've got the right pass.

She's not in the GAN area, thinks its 6 berth??

I took 4 visitors down from the hotel I stay at when I'm up, was a day of asking officers nicely and getting temporary passes but did it in the end.
Unfortunately I don't think I'll be back there till HMS Ambush arrives in 2012, else I'd have asked the question again.

I must admit, I thought it was a stretch of the A5 going through Ogwen Valley when I first saw the photos

I've driven over the Glencoe road a few times now but always when it's been REALLY miserable or the bloody camera had no film / batteries left

I may have to find an excuse to go visit friends up that way again and take spare batteries with me

Yup - A5 along the Ogwen valley (taken in the Winter 2009/2010) That Lake was completely frozen over as the Sun never got to it at any point during the day (the photo was taken around Midday from what I remember)

Bloody great roads to drive along, the only problem was: we kept stopping to take photos!
