Hi I bought a brand new ignition barrel ,housing and key for my 97 uk2000 wagon.I fitted it and it wont start.But if I refit my old barrel and key it starts.There is a black plastic housing around the the barrel with a black wire coming out of it for the security I assume.Im pretty certain my key doesn't have a chip in it.Any ideas on where I'm going wrong please

Uk classics had the passive transponder. JDM didn't.
Your on the right track, the key has to go through the black plastic ring (antenna) in order for it to disable the immobiliser.
It's been a while since I've looked at a classic ignition barrel, so I can't say for sure, but doesn't the ring just unclip so you fit it onto your new ignition barrel.

I did fit the black plastic housing over my new barrel but the car didn't want to no 🙄 as soon as I put my old one back on it starts.I have the flat key type

Yeah I have.I wonder if I can have the immobiliser turned off because I already have an after market alarm already fitted

You could always move the transponder chip from your old key to the new one. OR
If you purchased the items from Subaru it's very likely the new key has a new transponder chip in it that needs programming to the ecu/security module.
There are companies out there who will do it for you.
Read this link about obtaining new transponder keys and especially the info on key programming.........

I don't think I will be able to move the chip over to the new key. New key's on the right mine on the left

I already have a car alarm fitted seperate to the factory one

I'm assuming you've tried this and the car starts OK - your reply wasn't very clear.

Well if the old key is no longer in use and you have a decent (cat1) alarm system, I'd be looking at removing the transponder from it and fitting it where the signal can be picked up by the security module aerial.

Another option would be to get two transponder keys cut at somewhere like Timpsons and have the new transponders cloned to the old one.

At the moment I'm still using the old barrel and key because the new one won't start the car. I could try that idea and see where it goes

Why not remove the chip from the old key , drill a hole in the new key, insert chip in drilled hole, and glue up to stop chip falling out,
Or just tape the immobiliser chip to the new ignition and rely on the cat 1 to protect your car.

Where does the chip live started removing bits of the plastic from the key

I took the chip out of the key and taped it to the transponder then moved it out of sight
