shims go between piston & pads. There are vents ones and solid ones. They go pad, vented shim, solid shim, piston. This is for each pad, so you should have 4 x vented & 4 x solid on each caliper.

The Subaru 4-pot pads thave holes at the top for the pins, so there's no way you could fit the pads upside down. Technically, you could fit the calipers upside down but all the retaining pins again...
