Question Fife newbie!

Alright guys - just picked up my 93 WRX today -bloody awesome! - fitted with a full decat exhaust with downpipe, induction kit and dump valve. Previously drove a Prelude vtec. Can you guys tell me if I can run the scoob on normal 97 RON and add octane booster or does it have to be Optimax etc with the booster? - how can I tell what boost the car is currently running other than fitting a boost gauge?. Cheers guys.

Hello and welcome m8!

As i see, you know a bit about them already so i won't go to far into detail and risk makin an **** of myself, so i'll just say, you can run the WRX on unleaded or Optimax with octane booster, either will be fine for now, but in the future and maybe even if you can, always, run with the Optimax and booster...better to be safe than sorry!

As for the boost, IIRC, it should be about 0.97, although because it's a jap motor it might be a bit different, but not by a huge margin.

Get some pics up.

Might be worth popping into the group buy section and getting yourself a Knocklink just to be sure that its not detting.

IMHO the first thing anyone should buy for a JDM scoob is a knocklink, better safe than sorry!

To many people (generally not scoobynet folk) buy a JDM, run it on 95ron, blow it up then complain they're unreliable.

Optimax and booster mate get saving for an Apexi power FC ecu, that'll get you back to plain optimax and a bit of extra go into the bargain!

Dave

P.S. steer clear of the technical sections... the modding bug is terminal and highly contageous

Hi Vtec220,

Welcome to the world of crazy Impreza where your wallet takes a kickin!!
They recon you should be around 0.97Bar boost but.....if you have a deCAT downpipe and centre section then beware.

Honestly, i have had my STI2 for a while and its great but one thing i noticed was the boost went ape-**** when i put Eq. headers, deCAT dp and flexi UPPipe. At one point the boost was hitting almost 1.3Bar............Trust me thats defo not good.

Get yourself a Knocklink and boost gadge, it could save you £1000+ should something go "kiss kiss bang bang"

As above thread, watch out for the modding Virus, i have spent over £3500 on mine and its still not 100%.

With the Impreza when it comes to mods, you change 1thing, you must change 2other things to compensate.

Reach for the Sky but don't over expose your pennies and pounds. my car is sitting in the garage awaiting new uprated brakes due to some serious burning smell.

All the best with your car and future developments,

Chris

Alright mate, which bit of Fife are you from??

I wont go on about mods etc, I see thats already been done!!

If you are in mid/north Fife then pop along to the Dundee Meets, everyone is welcome. If you are in south Fife then it might be easier to attend Edinburgh/Lothian meets, I'm sure the guys down there will be happy to meet and greet a new face!!

Cheers,
Grant

In addition to the above advice.

I would strongly advice not to use the car to its max potential, I.E do not keep the foot planted over 100 mph for any period of time. Import WRX's were not designed to exceed 112mph and when you exceed this the top mount intercooler cannot cool the inlet charge and the charge temp will rise to astronomical levels. When the charge temp rises to much it will try and melt the pistons which will hit you with a bill for £1000+

Yup, from a peace of mind point of view run your JDM WRX on Optimax + OB plus install a Knocklink.
