N,
Yip, we are all related, but not immediate family.
We all come from Caithness, along with Sinclair’s and the Gunn’s. The Scottish name is of Norse origin, derived from "kof-gil" meaning misty ravine in the language of the Norse people who settled the area in the 9th century AD. Rapist and bloody pillagers if you ask me!
There are many spellings of the Scottish name including COGILL and more like COGLE, which is common in the islands north of Caithness. This gives a clue to the pronunciation of the name commonly used in our family.
The name Coghill also originated in Yorkshire and there also many Coghills in Ireland, apparently of the Yorkshire family origin. The earliest known record of Coghills in Caithness refers to Alexander Coghill of that Ilk, of Watten [near Wick] in 1630.
My Father is Alexander Sinclair Coghill and my son is Sinclair Alexander Coghill. This is very typical of the family name and goes way back for many generations, but for some reason my Mother screwed all that up when I came along and she gave me my name!
Many Coghills originating from the Caithness family have migrated to Australia, New Zealand and Canada. However the Coghills found in the United States of America are believed to be of Yorkshire
family origin, as are migrations to South Africa.
Bet you wish you never asked now...
