Porting certainly seems to help the vf turbo's from what I have seen.

Do you get a similarly fast spool off a ported OEM turbo? Or is it just a cost effective way of upping the power?

Faster spool and improved torque and power,it's a good way at getting power From a OE turbo without forking out for a hybrid.SJ.

I'm being seduced by these billet turbos at the moment SJ, I am strill trying to figure out if I can get away with a good map but think to minimise lag as much as possible a map and billet will be the way forward.

Your thinking right mateget the right tools for the job and your mapping session will be well worth while,I say keep up with the times mate,if billet is the way Subaru Specialist are extracting more power and torque with quicker spooling turbos,I myself would lean more towards getting it done, and the link to that gentlemen above comes very highly recommended for all the before mentioned turbo adaptions, and with very good prices tooSJ.
