Default Newbie with a Litchfield Type-20

Hi guys - first post here so please be nice and excuse my ignorance on stuff - I'm new to all things Scooby.

I have just agreed the purchase of a 54 plate Litchfield Type 20 Impreza. I am buying the car from someone I know who has had it 3 years and looked after it very very well. The service history is immense. I've had a Mondeo ST220 for the last 4 1/2 years and 60,000 miles but the time had come for a change and after looking at a few different options, including EVO X and Focus RS, I decided the Scooby was for me. The test drive was amazing. I pick it up sometime in the next fortnight, depending when the ST sells.

The car started life as a Japanese STi which was imported by Litchfield and had the following mods carried out - Cosworth air filter, sports cat, Miltek exhaust, AST suspension and remap. Litchfield claim 350bhp/345ftlb of torque - I am however a huge sceptic when it comes to RR figures having seen some ridiculous figures on forums over the years - I know it's quick though. The current owner changed the AST suspension for Type-C suspension as he found the AST rather firm on Aberdeenshires dire roads and he was using the car for the kids etc. I am getting the AST setup with the sale though so may give it a go when (or if) summer decides to show itself.

So here it is -

Thanks for reading

Paul

You could have got a clean one

Welcome.

I would beware of the AST as I put them on my Hawkeye when I first got it and despite a number of attempts by Curtis to dial them in to provide some compliance they never provided any comfort. They were, however, better than the standard suspension.

Haha, yeah, I took the pic after the test drive over some mucky roads. It was fun getting it looking like that.

The guy selling it has told me he only ever ran the AST in its most compliant guise and says at that it's very stiff. The Spec C setup feels really good to me so I suspect it will stay. Thanks for the feedback.

I had AST on my classic. Absolutely fantastic on a smooth'ish bit of road but a bloody nightmare on anything other than decent tarmac.
I think they are aimed more towards the track because on 90% of British roads they are just too firm.

Nice car and if you plan on using it mostly on the road stay with the original suspension.

I was never happy with my ASTs on bumpy roads, the car was never planted on anything but a smooth road.

Hi Paul, welcome indeed, from someone else with exactly the same car. In fact, yours is the first one I've heard of being bought or sold since I bought mine back at the end of November 2011.

They aren't exactly common and it's great to see another one.

The figures you've quoted look more like the standard Type 25 (2.5 litre) ones though. Mine is apparently 'only' 315BHP.
Can anyone confirm the original Type 20 blob figures please?

Figures seem correct for the 2ltr twin scroll engine so not really dubious, these do produce more torque than a UK engine, plus there is a bit more to come out of that if you have her remapped again

Thanks guys for the warm welcome.

I will post more pics when I pick it up. Can't wait!

In answer to the question on power figures, those figures are from an email that Ian Litchfield sent the current owner when he was buying the car. I believe Ian ran the car himself for a while. I believe the type 25 was around 400bhp from what I have read.

Nice to find another type 20 owner - my googling has revealed very little about the 20.

Welcome along. Got to love the work Ian Litchfield does.
I bought a JDM Hawk from him 18 months ago, 400bhp (accordint to Ian) and it's a great machine.
Pity i can't say aberdeens roads are great but you can't have everything!

The power figures are interesting. Mine came with a printout from ScoobyClinic in 2011 of 314.7 BHP, so perhaps it's a little under the weather. Or maybe it's down to the calibration of different rolling roads? It certainly feels quick.

I started a topic some time back trying to find out more about the blob Type 20s, which is here:

Interesting info about the T20s. I think the guy I'm getting said he'd heard there were 54 Type-20s but that's third hand info so may well be wrong. I will ask when I pick it up.

I tend to ignore rolling road figures as I think many are set to tell owners what they want to hear and not the truth. Perhaps I'm too cynical. Lol.

Nice to see another member nearby. Any other Aberdeen and shire members on here? I used to arrange meets on the ST forum I was on and will no doubt be up for that here too.

I'm getting the feeling I should stick with the Spec C suspension. Suits me as it saves the labour to change it

Anything you do with the suspension will mean paying to have it re-aligned as it's got various eccentric bolts on it to allow for adjustment, so keeping it as it is sounds like a very good idea.

It's a shame you'd have so far to travel to take the car to Litchfield's (near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire) for its servicing as I know they like to see their cars again.

I was made very welcome with mine when I took it there last October for its MoT, alignment and service, although I'm only about 75 miles away.

Yeah, Litchfields place is too far for me to go for servicing - the trip would cost more than the service work. The car will be maintained by Brian Downie near Aberdeen who has looked after the car for the last three years (and actually picked up on a few things Litchfield had missed when they sold the car to the guy I'm buying it off).

Looks like I have a buyer for my ST220 so with luck I'll be picking up the Scooby early next week Can't wait now! Am feeling like a kid at Christmas!

Have you sorted your insurance yet? I had a right game with mine to start with as it just says 'Subaru' on the logbook and none of the usual firms had got it on their lists ('is it an STi Type UK?'...er, no!)

I ended up with Keith Michaels, but Greenlight and A Plan were also very helpful.

I envy you the excitement of your forthcoming purchase. It's a great feeling.

Yeah, insurance is sorted. £795 from A Plan. Annoyingly I have to change from the current insurer and lose 5 months NCD but they want £800 on top of the £400 I have already paid them for the ST220 (which is modded). Given that I'm 26 and the car will be kept on street I didn't think that was too horiffic. I believe Litchfield recommended A Plan to buyers.
