Default Deceleration Whine

I've noticed a whining noise when I decelerate (lift off acc pedal) only in second and first gear when im slowing to low rpm's. Seems quite loud.. Sounds like a sequential gearbox whine. Or the noise a car makes in reverse.

Any one got any ideas as to what is wrong?

Exact thing happened to my gearbox (5 speed). It was there for a long time (2 years) to no ill effect, except for the noise. Interested to hear opinions.

My blob wagon does this also. Some say it's the norm, some say it's a worn bearing in the gearbox.

Nothing to worry about at low speeds. Had similar on most of my previous cars. Pug 306 GTI was loudest and i had that for 9 years with no problems.

Gearbox issue. you could try to take new oil for your gearbox and throw a banana in it and mix everything, sometimes it works very fine. my old 1996 impreza had the 2nd and 3rd problems, banana helped the box to live 4 years more

My 2010 Civic Type R did this worse than any car I've ever driven before, it was comical it was that loud/pronounced.

I just put it down to the LSD though. It's a valid excuse for seeing a dragon in the kitchen so I guess it works to explain a whining car too.

This can be heard in almost all road cars, even more so on subarus n such as they come with less sound proofing, their is a lot of natural 'whine' from the gearbox so when you let off n the exhaust goes quiet its the only time your likley to hear it! If you listen closley to rally cars you can hear lots of transmission whine (as well as the turbo whine!) Unless your havin problems with gear engagement I would worry as much

Yeah just not sure what it is, would be nice to know exactly. I'm gunna change the gearbox oil an diff oil to see what that does to the noise. The problem is its really loud on deceleration 1st or 2nd gear. But disappears when I put the clutch in.. But I think it can be heard slightly very very slightly on acceleration too??
