getting non-specialist insurers to understand mods!
Just been on the phone with Aviva, trying to get a quote on policy change for the mods I have planned on my bug sti - rather than just getting them done and then finding out that price jump is too crazy to justify!
Tried to inquire about possible premium change with:
* sports cat
* remap
* exhaust upgrade
* air filter
Unfortunately although she tried her best the girl on the phone was having real trouble understanding, and eventually it ended up being taken as:
* engine "chip" (as she couldn't understand ECU remap)
* performance exhaust replacement (as she couldn't understand sport cat & exhaust upgrade)
* air filter
= I said this would give approx extra 50bhp
she had a lengthy chat with underwriters & notified me that this potentially pushes my annual premium from just over 600 to just below 800 (if the mods had been in place from day 1). Does this sound like a reasonable jump for a mainstream insurer? And would I be correctly covered, given what she has interpreted it as?
Next year it will be a specialist for me after I go ahead with the mods, tis too much hassle trying to get mainstream insurers to understand!!

A mainstream insurer told me they wont insure my car with a dump valve , they were ok with remap and exhaust change but dump valve was no no, bizarre when of those three mods dump vale does the least to enhance performance . Always best to use a specialist.

Yup, try telling std insurers what a Litchfield Type 20 is!

Unfortunately couldn't get a quote with Keith Michaels due to car being kept on road overnight most of the time. Will defo try some of the other specialists though.
Think its ridiculous to be treated like you've just landed from mars by an insurer when mentioning something like a remap. Understandable that not everybody who works at their call centers has all the answers but you would think they would have someone there who can accurately answer questions about the product that they are selling
Will try again nearer the time of getting my parts fitted and hopefully speak to someone more useful. My biggest concern is that they seemingly didn't understand what a remap is and wanted to put it down as a 'superchip'. Don't want to get the work all done only find out that they don't cover mapping and be screwed!
Don't suppose there's anyone here with an aviva policy and have a remap?
