my mate is looking to get one of these, hes had turbos cars all his life but this particualr model has caught his eye. He doesnt want an STI.

1)he would like to know what sorta power they can be tuned to?without getting bigger turbo. bigger injectors etc?
2) rough mpg of a standard one non tuned one?
3) servicing costs and maintenance?
4)most expensive part to go wrong.

Some of these questions are affected by many variables it is impossible to put a figure on. I will give you my own experience on my 2001 UK Turbo 2000:

1. Bought the car standard in 2005, fitted a second hand PPP producing 240 ish BHP. Happy with that.

2. Generally 25-27mpg, less on a blast, more on a steady run. I once saw 36 on a long motorway run, only once though!

3. I used to get mine servived at a Subaru dealership then a specialist now I do it myself. Dealers are expencive £150-200 every 6 months for routine stuff, no major parts. A specialist slightly cheaper and obviously home servicing is cheapest. If you have the ability there is nothing frightening about a Subaru. I buy all my parts from Camskill in Whitehaven, they're about half the price of dealer parts and are generally the same.

4. Most expencive is the motor. Mine had a new short motor in 2007 at a cost of £2500 at 65000 miles, failed MAF sensor was the cause. I now change the MAF routinely every 2 years. During my ownership i've had to replace the TD04 turbo - £75 second hand, radiator - £70, turbo intake pipe - £139, radiator top hose - £20, front recon brake calipers - £200, front discs - £50. All fitted by myself.

If you buy one plase look after it, if you don't keep on top of the maintenance it will bite you big style. They're not like most cars that don't get the bonnet opened between services, you should check things regularly.

If you do look after it it will reward you with a great driving experience. Enjoy

1. If it's a MY99 for example, 270-280 before the standard TD04 runs out of puff. Other MY's will differ turbo dependant.
2. My MY99 returned about 22-25mpg around town on V-power, upto 30 on a long run.
3. Totally dependant on what service - there are different ones you know Say £200-450 from oil/plugs through to major inc cambelt.
4. The engine or gearbox. Engine would be £2000 onwards depending on rebuild spec. Reconditioned gearbox for my MY99 was £900 plus stripping of old, refit, new clutch and service = £1700.

As an MY00 turbo owner for 8 years:

MPG is avg 24-27 that's modded remapped. But driving normally (i.e. mostly off boost).

Decatting, panel filter, lightweight flywheel and pulleys, fuel pump and FPR saw over 270bhp and 280ftlb of torque. That was done in 2008 and the car is fine six years later. Those mods did not decrease MPG in fact it got a little better after the map.

Maintenance you can't really say. I have always done mine myself.

As said an engine going pop is the most expensive issue.

Well looked after these cars go on and on. My car is on about 118,000 original engine, box, turbo, injectors etc. Only been through two clutches in its life (on third now) been through about six sets of discs and pads, about 8 sets of tyres. Only things that have gone wrong really were sensors (ICV, KNOCK AND MAF) All easy fixes but quite dear (ICV is about £300!).

I don't class that as bad for a car pushed to 270bhp and 14 years old!

But lots of cars of this ages blew up years ago.

Why do I think mine is still going?

I look after it.

I always let it warm up for at least a minute and always let it tickover for a minute before turning off. I always observe the obsessive oil change procedure where the filter is prefilled and the engine cranked with no spark to build pressure that some people say isn't required.

I regularly check all fluids, tyres, belts etc. I always follow the service schedule. I don't thrash the crap out of the car that often. The oil doesn't get up to temp until about 12-15minutes of driving. That's most of my journies done. If it isn't up to temp I drive off boost.

Now I realise it could go pop tomorrow but I have done ok so far.

The problem is how do you know what has been done to the car by previous owners? This is what kills them. People don't look after them, they don't service them, they drive them on boost with cold oil, they rev the engine before turning the car off, they fit manual boost controllers and crap induction kits and reconnect vacum pipes wrongly etc etc. Then some poor chap buys it and ends up with a dog and comes on here asking why it doesn't run right.

I was lucky and in 2006 got a completely unmodded car that had one owner from new and was loved and cherished. Finding that now is near impossible.
