Hi

My car currently needs an engine rebuild (classic type r) and the garage have qouted me in the region of 5K

The valves are giving me low compression and they've also advised to buy a new short block, pistons plus plenty of other parts

Is 5K what I would expect to be paying ?

Has anyone else fitted a used engine as this would slash that price in half ?

I'm just asking because my knowledge is very limited and I'm not made of money

any help appreciated

5k? should cost between 2.5-3k
You have not said where you are? there are a fair few options open to you depending on which area of the country your in.

Yep 5K

1200 for the short block

600 pistons

450 clutch

valves reset, head skimmed, oil pump, belts, gaskets + 20 hours labour

I'm located in Scotland, the reason it needs rebuilt is because I blew the headgasket

Are they having me on then, they said by the time they refurbed my block I may aswell buy a new one ?

Doing online searches people are offering rebuilds for 2 K so I dont understand why mine is so much

Pistons, rods, new crank, oil modine, uprated oil pump etc will still cost you less than 2k quid, and thats using good stuff, a skim with an engineer checking for cracks and warping in the block without a rebuild is about 800 quid, so yes, stupidly expensive.
What version is your type R?

I'm going to the garage tomorrow to discuss it and they were wanting 2K deposit for block and pistons, I'm considering taking a trailer and just taking the car back

They said something about a crank float aswell when I asked about using my block

What would you do then ? Send my engine away to be rebuilt somewhere else ?

Yup, their prices are stupidly expensive, post in the scottish section on here for places near you that they recommend for rebuilds

A few people have used them and more than happy with their service
The "V9" crank is the better twin scroll crank, just looking at the crank and rods/pistons should give you an idea on price.

Unless your block is cracked, I doubt you will, it just needs inspecting, and unless you drove miles and miles with the hg gone, its doubtful its knackered.

the fact the garage is advising you buy a short block and pistons shows they cannot be trusted. A new shortblock contains the piston / crank / etc. Get your car back and take it elsewhere.

I'd put a new EJ257 short block in if it was me.

Its an option, except that its going to increase your insurance for the extra cc, your going to have to forge the entire engine as the 2.5's suck, the gearbox will suffer etc...
Easier to just forge the 2ltr and run a safe 350-400bhp

Get it ona trailer and down to Alan at as performance at birtly co Durham ( just past the metro centre ) leave it have a weeks holiday in lakes and then collect it

can i ask where abouts you are in scotland?? im in edinburgh and a lot of guys including me would point you to sw motorsport in penicuik, steve whitson is the man to speak to, he rebuilt andy forrests own car, andy recommends him cant ask for more praise than that. give him a call mate.

whats there justification for needing a new block? if its damaged, or warped etc then yes you'll need a new block, but, unless they have a valid reason not sure how they can say that unless its been stripped down.

sounds like an absolute worst case quote to me, did they say worst case?

As said above though seem high, but does it include VAT? most quotes are + vat

Sounds to me like they have your car (in bits) & are attempting to take advantage £2-3k should see a good rebuild.

Sounds like they are taking you for a ride mate. Like said above,most new short motors come with pistons,rods and crank already in them.

My current engine is coming out tommorow, unsure what is wrong with it at present but will post issues and cost of re-build if appropriate asap.

As for my last car (UK300) that had an engine re-build, I used Scoobyteknix which was superb service, I ran the car for 1500 miles running in, and then managed to push around 340bhp and simular torque so the engine proved to be a good build. The cost was below 2k ;-)

I asked about using my block and they said theres play in the crank (which I witnessed)

Its not been split yet and I was told by the time its been bored etc I may aswell buy a new one ??

I spoke to API and they have a fully rebuilt engine in stock for £1600 + Vat, sounds like a better option to me

API engine sounds a good buy....From what i understand theres not a huge amount work involved in taking the impreza engine out, if your reasonably handy with your spanners and can borrow/hire/buy a crane

It's a long drive down to Warwickshire BUT I would trust API and David O'Brien with my life never mind a Scoob

If he has the engine built you could either have it posted and drop in by a closer specialists (AS Performance??) or have David do it at API. Could also spec it up whilst with David too
