Hawk STi engine reliability?
Hello folks,
I saw the thread on 2.5 litre engine reliability.
A couple of questions:
Are the Hatch STi's more prone to these problems than the Hawk STi's? The thread seems to have twice as many 2008 STi's having problems as 2006 & 2007s. How common are problems on the Hawk STi's compared to Hatch STi's?
Also, is the problem down to the map used? Is there a different map on the 2008 compared to the 2006? People mention weak pistons, but are they not the symptom, with the map being the true issue? If so, does a remap actually protect these engines?

The map is the main issue and the original map on the hatch STi was shocking til they did the reflash at the subaru dealers. The main problem was running boost right into a hard fuel cut at the rev limit (which was very low at 6500). Because the rev limit is very low - people were just flying into it whilst still on boost and .... tinkle tinkle.
The Subaru reflash solution was to effectively put a lower soft rev limit in below this which starts to cut in at 6200 ish from memory.

That thread is aimed at hatch engines, hence the bias of their failures.
The last year has seen threads on high oil consumption and coolant problems with 2006-07 (mainly 06 cars) engines all related to head gaskets and ringland damage.
A trip over to NASIOC land shows the same issues.

No problems on mine so far 10k miles, HG's and cracked VF43's seem to be the favourites but every car is different, beit oil used, type of driving. Inherent weakness' will surface depending on the owner and the conditions it's driven in IMHO
Sensible mods, good servicing and safe mapping is a good way to mitigate potential issues but nothing in life is guaranteed

Cheers for all the responses so far folks.
So the 2008 has greater problems than the 2006? Seems the 2008 has map problems and the 2006 has head gasket problems (and what are ringland problems btw?).
It's the 2006/07 STi I'm interested in - I want to understand how risky a buy they are! What sort of costs would be antipated for the head gasket issues - eg £1k, £2k etc?
cheers again
Andy

ringlands = the part of the piston that locates the rings... these have failed on the 2.5, more common on the 2008+ car partly due to DET. (See Dunc's explanation above).

I got my Hawkeye fully stripped down and rebuilt with forged pistons and the rest, had done 50k before and was running sweet but now got it mapped by Andy Forrest to 450bhp and it goes like a rocket very pleased.

my 06 hawk is on 48k and has not missed a beat. your problems start when upping the power, as has been pointed out piston ring failure is most likely. prodrives generic map (info from an employee btw) was finally decided purely on reliability so as to secure the warranty endorsement from subaru. yes "safe maps" are available independently, and car specific. apparently the generic ppp map had a car constantly on a banked oval test track for 24 hours solid, before being checked over and then finalised

Sounds great Adam. Is it on a Milltek & MD321T per chance? How much would it have been just to replace the pistons?

I think it is on the Miltek, as i was not near the car when all the work was done, by the way it's been remapped again by Andy Forrest, and now sitting on 473 BHP and 459Ft and i am realy chuffed with it.

As it happens, I decided against the modded UK Sti (wouldn't have had the cash for an engine rebuild) and plumped for a 2006 Spec C Litchfield Type 20.
Awaits Adam's 2012 post with eager anticpiation...............
