This has to be down to quality control surely.
I had an extended thread on here after suffering big end and crankshaft failure on a 2 litre WRX PPP that had full Subaru history and went bang at 36k miles.
There was never a satisfactory answer as to why mine went and there were always a great many others that had done starship mileages without any problems to be quoted against.
Now it seems the problem has migrated to the pistons on the 2.5 litre cars, and again there is no satisfactory explanation and not all are affected.
IM don't seem to have a clue, or at least seem to be acting like the three wise monkeys and in any case were of no support or help in my case.
I even wrote to the company in Japan with copies of all correspondence, but they just referred me back to IM.
I wouldn't even consider buying a new Subaru, and that is just one previously 'loyal' customer (this is my second Impreza).
The only consistent thing here is the inconsistency. That, for me points to poor quality control.
I just couldn't take the chance with my hard-earned again.

And as ive found out today, i was looking at buying a new STI or even the new Booted version, and i asked to speak to the head of sales and mechanics to discuss this port issues, or as i called the dreaded ring syndrome, both confirmed although they were aware of it, it wasnt has apparent as i was thinking on here, BUT 1 had done 2 the other none.

Taking into account there arnt many 2008 > stis out there compared to lets say an AUDI TT etc, i still think its a gamble what you get and as the guy above said Quality control is poor, some built by Frank whos been there 30 years and some by Pete 12 months YTS.

Im seriously thinking of looking at an EVO now but the fuel on the 330 is even worse than the scoooby ((((((((((((

it has been determined that engine failures have occurred due to:

Unofficial “grey” Imports of undetermined specification, ie. not supplied by Subaru (UK)


How and why is that a reason for failure?

It just isn't a reason is it. It is a ludicrous statement from a company that are not brave enough to recognize and deal a global issue.

The more you read up on this the more it becomes laughable to be honest.

It seams it needs someone to sue their lilly IM ***'s off again and get their customer care back in line with the rest of the world.

Just read this

WELCOME TO THE CLUB. I talked with the owner of the local Subu dealer about this and he said they didn't do a recall because not all the cars in the build dates had problems (not enough cars affected). They basically made the decision to what and seen what failed and then fix it rather than recall all cars and fix them or fix before selling them.

Any of u had late 2009 2010 ones go ? But saying that according to this its between a date range they rolled off the line.

bit ****e though.

This has really put me off from buying one. I'll stick with my Hawkeye for another year.

6 months left, being done under warranty.

From what I can see if you have the re-flash and stick at standard power then it'll hold for some time. The bad map showed up a problem with the pistons that may not have come to light within the warranty. I fitted the PPP thinking it was just a mapping issue but all that did was put me closer to the failure point of the pistons.

For me:
Bad map & pistons = 6 months & 3.5k miles
PPP & pistons = 2 years & 14k miles

Some have had a custom map at over 350bhp and they have lasted longer than both mine put together but they do go in the end.

Scoobs i suppose the other question id like to know is if the above statement is right WTF have all you guys bought em from ?

Im presuming most of you got them from UK dealers ?

Doesnt make sense

Looking at the USA it looks like that AUG 08 seems to be the area they were bad, and it was down to an ECU making the burn too lean or something, but also a possible wrong coolant.

But do we have any NONE 08.early 09s that have gone pop IE 2010 onwards ? that have a production date of backend of 09

Dear Littleted

Models from the first 08 Sti's through to the later 330S 'prodrive' models have gone pop.

The 'engine failure due to grey imports or v heavy road use' story is absolute bull...

Problem is poor ecu trickery to get around emissions, and brittle hyperneuticrap pistons.

Product not fit for purpose tbh.

A performance car that you daren't use as a performance car is very ironic.

Default Engine Failures

Hi,
You will have to excuse me if this has been said already as I have not had the time to read the thread in full.

Has anyone contacted Watchdog or Top Gear? they may be interested in this information, especially as Subaru UK used to lead Top Gears customer care poll for a number of years.
A petition or just a list of pissed off owners could generate a bit of interest and maybe shame the powers that be into some positive action.

This problem won't go away !!!

Subaru of today have no interest whatsover in real customer satisfaction. They are content to body swerve this issue, continue to fit new short motors (as they fail) then they will walk away when the warranty expires.

Every single owner should IMO make the effort to let Subaru know how poor this situation and there response is.

Come on guys lets have an e-mail off every last one of you to Andrew Edmiston (M.D International Motors). It doesn't matter if your car is U.K or Euro, they are all made by Subaru and our route to feedback our feelings is through I.M.
