Is this issue just on STI's? Im on a 2009 wrx, 15k mileage.

Mines a 2009 sti hatch, 8500 miles since start of October 2009, no issues as yet. Was remapped by Subaru before I bought it with delivery mileage, at point of entry to the UK. Keeping my fingers crossed......lol

I nearly choked on my coffee when I read some of the horror stories. Cant believe how callous IM has been with warranties. Guess at the end of the day, they'll try anything not to pay out, they're a business. Maybe its time someone rang Watchdog, though it might do Subaru more harm than good....

going to ring the garage tomorrow been without my sti now for 7 weks was told new short engine due to be delivered from sweden today so fingers crossed tomorrow they will say yes its here and i can get my car back soonn.... i want to play with my scooby again forgotten whats its like to drive had to use my sons octavia vrs the other night just to try and replicate a car with a bit of power its pushing 220 bhp so quickish not like my scoob oh well never mind better than a n/a forester that the garage have lent me with 150 bhp ish......

Car is in the process of having a short motor fitted, no 4 piston was found to have a crack, all covered under warrenty...


New Dealer i found has been fanatastic, really couldnt have asked for better service...

So are you saying a new short motor is not going to fix the intial problem? havent the parts been revised to fix this issue?

Dont think i could put up with another failure... with the amount of mileage i do it would be out of warrenty the next time it pops....

thats pants fellas. wont scooby do anything about this? how come its happening to the sti and not wrx? i know its more powerful, but is it purely something to do with the mapping or are there actual defective parts involved?

The piston design has been suggested as the prime cause by some.
If the short engine contains the same pistons as those that failed then it seems to be a gamble by Subaru that another failure will happen before the warranty runs out.

I don't think the failures are limited to the 330 and the PPP versions as mine is completely stock, mine was also refered to the factory with a lot of paperwork before the thumbs up for a new short motor.

surly if the issue was within in the map this would have been addressed as is non invasive fix.

I really hope these are revised parts going in....

yippee am happy got my 57 plate sti type uk back tonight with its new short engine going to run it in carefully for about 1000 miles then get an oil change and filter .....many thanks to carstins for all their help and lending me 2 cars over the last 8 weeks.... must book some time off work to do some drivin.........cant wait...also castins have extended my warranty till december as the car has been off the road since july as a good will gesture many thanks

The whole issue is a disgrace. This is a long standing problem that Subaru continue to body swerve.

Cars will keep failing and ultimately Subaru customers will walk away (and never come back)

The responce and lack of action is a gamble Subaru will lose. The subject needs more publicity and hopefully a legal challenge.

All these motors in stock? Then why did mrfastbaz have to have his short motor imported from sweden and have to wait 7 weeks. I'd be giving someone at IM a real roasting if it was me!! So much for customer service!

I have been checking on Subaru web sites. The 2.5 litre 300bhp engine appears to be used in the STI in America, Australia and South Africa..so pretty global. Is the UK the only country to be suffering these engine failures? If so Why?

If Subaru don't rectify this problem then customers will surely switch to other manufacturers rather than risk a very costly out of warranty failure. Unless the STI makes up so little of the total sales Subaru are prepaired to live with the bad press and lose the customer? Either way Subaru is not handeling the issue in the UK well. Customers will eventually vote with their Feet! Subaru be warned!

Have a read of NASIOC and there is a poll on IWST on this very issue.
Seems that problems started with the GR model even though 2.5 engines had already been around for a few years.

Was there a piston redesign at this time?

I have stripped out 3 ej257 new short engines in the last few weeks for power builds, & the pistons removed from the std replacement units, still have the same design type pistons as they always had for the Hatch STI.

I think Subaru, & in particular IM in this country keep ignoring the problem they think it will go away, which it will, as stated on here, they won't have any failed engines as the cars will be standing in showrooms unsold.
