Default 100,000 mile service + strange noise...

Have had my scoob (STi UK 04) for 6 weeks now and have had a lot of fun so far, but now need to get it serviced as it has just clicked over 100,000 miles. Has always been serviced by a main dealer but I am not a great fan of main dealers generally, or their prices!!

Have see a few posts about Zen Performance, who are only 15 miles away from me, does anyone else in Northampton head their way for servicing?

Also the past day or two a strange whistling noise, with an almost random pitch change kind of sound (sounds a bit like a spooky ghost for want of a better description??) has been coming from the engine bay. It happens when stationary so not bearings or wind noise etc. Also it seems to only start when the car is warm, and is worse when I wive it a few revs 2500+. Any ideas???

At 100k it must be due for its second cambelt. Suggest get done asap.

My 03STI has done 41k and I'm interested in how well your car is generally with that many miles on it. EG oil consumption, performance, suspension clonks etc.

Cheers, Diccy.

Does it sound like a distant police siren?

EDIT: Ignore this -I just saw it happens when stationary - so it isn't what I thought it might be.

OMG 100,000 mile since 04, that car has been around!!!!

I think Zen are well respected but I don't have first hand experience.

Dont know about the noise though, posibly a service and an exorcism!! I think the exorcism will be extra (nice to see the stamp in the service book though!)

Alternator/pas pump/aircon bearing?
Are your belts overtight?
Dont really know but worth checking maybe (put one end of a long screwdriver on the part and your ear to the other end and listen).
Please be carefull when doing this as rotating parts will catch any loose clothing or long hair etc.
hth.

Ta for the help guys. To answer a few questions, the shocks were replaced at 52k miles so might be a problem due to be rearing its head again soon eh?? I did think I had a clonking noise when I picked it up, but it turned out to be the tool kit bouncing arround loose in the rear left boot compartment...doh! A cheap and easy fix though!!
I think I will get Zen to do the service and get them to perform the excorcism too...hopefuly nothing too nasty!?

Other than that the car doesnt feel like a 100k mile car at all, steering and gearbox still feel really tight, have only done 1000 miles in it so far but no regrets so far...lets see what Zen say...watch this space...

Depending on which side of Northampton you are at, you could try API for servicing maybe.

They are based at Harbury, Between Southam and Leamington - so not too far.

Hopefully you will be booked in tomorrow, but in the meantime you could do worse than to check out this recent thread which pretty much sums us up.

If you come to Zen, I can assure you you'll get what you want at the right price.

Hi Paul, just called and booked in.
Earliest appointment was next wednesday though so as I have got a "spare" car handy, would you advise not driving it until I can get it over to you guys to diagnose?

Also along with the 50k service I may possibly need several other fluids changing at the same time as most dont seem to have been changed for a while;
eg. Engine oil @83k, Brake fluid, gearbox oil, coolant etc. @63k.

So will take your advice on this.

I would recommend you phone us! Posting questions on a thread that gets lost a few pages back within a single day is no guarantee of getting an answer!

wrt the noise, you could always just nip over for us to check it out prior to your service.

my 03sti+ppp has just passed 110k.

drives great. had rear mounts and shock replaced and that;s it apart from a few sets of tyres , pads , and discs

4th to 5th has got stiff at high revs ... in garage right now checking it out

I have my own optimax pump in my drive ... shell felt that was only fair given my contribution to their p&l.

Oil has been ok ... couple of litres at 6k in between services.

best investments:

prodrive springs and setup at powerstation
AP organic clutch at TSL ... excellent.

- Mark.

Ta for that...at least I know they dont just self destruct at 101k...phew!
And I know what you mean about the optimax pump...lol....I am getting 20mpg on good days!! Was expecting it though so not a biggie. I would be tempted by the AP clutch when the time comes as I have a few mates who also rave about it!

Have managed to track down where the spooky noise is coming from today;

It looks to be coming from the aircon doo-dah next to the alternator. Sounds like it has some form of clutch in it that is slipping. Sounds worse when it is stopped (with the aircon switched off), and better when it is spinning;

This photo is of the engine bay, and you can see the thing spinning next to the alternator;

This photo shows the spinning thingybob stopped (aircon turned off) and its noisy!

If anyone else has had this, gis a shout, although it is heading into Zen on Wednesday anyway now so will let you know if mymy suspicions are correct.
