Default Panel filter recommendations 2.5

Having seen a bit of bad press with the cosworth and K & N panel filters I’m wondering what alternatives are out there.

Im starting to think a standard Subaru filter will be ok at 320 ish bhp.

Ive been told the AEM is good, anybody else using one of these?

The OEM standard ones are oiled anyway, lightly.

342bhp here and no issues.

K&N do what's called recharge kits. Cleaner and oil along with oiling instructions. Had one in my Nova GTE back in the day, they are good quality filters no two ways about it.

Just a misting of oil should be ample....but follow the guide and stay on the side of caution with the aerosol spray on oil, MAF's hate oil.

I'm using AEM after the problem with the Cosworth one, but always used K&N prior to that. I did clean the K&N every oil change, so at 3000/5000 miles

Out of interest how does the cleaning process of the AEM differ to the K & N ??

in general unless you live in the Sahara desert the K&N will rarely require any cleaning and even less oiling.................

Depends what you call rarely. When I bought my hatch, it had a K&N. When I checked it, 1/3of it was blocked flush with the top of the pleats. Obviously I don't know it's history. The car had done ~90,000 miles.

So just to update on the cosworth filter.

I spoke to Mark at Thwaites and asked what filter he would recommend.
First one he said..... “Cosworth”

“We have been using them for years with no issues at all”
He would also be interested to see any data or tests that prove otherwise.

“There have been no recalls from Cosworth”

I also think he said he keeps them in stock.

Thats good enough for me, I’m sticking with Cosworth.

Well ET are no mugs and certainly wouldn’t want a filter cocking up one of their new builds.

thanks Rusti

All I can say is just check your air box exit, or maf pipe after 2000 miles for fine dust. Perhaps I'm exposed to more dust than most, up a track.

When you say “up a track” you mean you are driving up a road without tarmac everyday?

It was stated in another thread that you can see right through a Cosworth filter, i beg to differ, unless it was a cheap copy or seriously worn.

This picture is taken with the sun blaring behind the filter through a window.
I really cannot see **** all through this filter.

An un-oiled K&N filter is the equivalent to taking a stock filter and punching about a dozen holes through it with a pencil. The oil is better than half of the filtering medium. Even fuly oiled, the reason why K&N filters have less pressure reduction is because they do less filtration. If you are concerned about minimizing scoring on your cylinders, you shouldn't use a K&N filter-they are designed for clean track usage, not for everyday road driving. At least not without being cleaned every couple of weeks.

Yeah, I know they are probably the easiest and cheapest bit of 'track specific' accessory you can buy, and they come with a rad-looking sticker. But in the end using a K&N filter on a daily driver makes as much sense as driving around with only the center wiper cocked at a 45°, or those guys who 'stance' their Subarus and grind their exhaust on every small bump. Poor choices have consequences later....

Interesting.

So regular driving in dusty conditions with a K&N panel filter could mean a dusty airbox / maf ?
How often would you clean and re-oil under those conditions ?
