Best (New-ish) family car for £30k-ish?

Funnily enough yes and mostly thanks to the purchase of the Golf.
I'm keeping the wife's old car for now as my daily which means I can start tearing into the Subaru and fitting parts without worrying about not having it on the road for school runs and getting to work. I'm going to attempt to fit as much as I can myself before sending it off to the specialist to have it mapped. So hopefully this summer I'll get time to do a few bits and progress the car finally. Exciting times.

Subaru = 335bhp & 420lb/ft - Manual with permanent 4WD.(Actual 223bhp/tonne)
Golf R = 296bhp & 280lb/ft - 7 speed DSG with 4Motion (Quoted 195bhp/tonne)
They both put the power down differently and are very different cars to drive. The Subaru feels like it has less lag in every day driving and more instant pick up and punch, but I have to say the golf really surprises you just how much it pushes you back in the seat and I think in some cases it feels even faster than my Subaru.
In standard form both these cars should have pretty much identical 0-60 times of 5s, but seeing as my Subaru is modified and re-mapped it should be quicker than this. However, I just don't know if it is. The golf feels seriously fast on the road and with the DSG box is lightening fast.
I love my Subaru and love driving it every day and will not be selling it, but I'm starting to fall for the Golf and can see the attraction. Such a comfortable car, so well built, so refined, so well equipped compared to the Subaru. Can poddle along in luxury and comfort in quiet mode or turn it into a complete hooligan.
I'm split and glad I don't have to choose between one or the other!
Can't wait to compare my Subaru once it's at it's 450bhp target in a couple of months, then I will get the stage 1 map done on the golf to 370bhp which in theory should then be able to do 3.5s 0-60 times!
