Default Oil Cooler options - where to buy - where to locate

Hi all,

Looking around it would seem prices vary hugely from anywhere near £500 to £100.

What are people using, and where are you locating the cooler. Notice some folk locating under the bonnet scoop if running FMIC.

Cheap and cheerful, or cheap and nasty? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/22-Row-Th...YAAOSwy5Ja3W5v

ive never understood why you would want to locate an oil cooler where you have removed the intercooler. the hottest place in the engine bay.

mocal or perrin are good bits of kit, fit between the front upper and lower bars in front of the rad.

Cheers for the info.

I believe the 2.5 get hot quick when on WOT for long periods, the Scoop is there for a reason so figured it might as well have a purpose. I understand what you are saying though, especially if queued in traffic.

I know someone with a yellow S202 with a missing oil cooler. I was talking to him on our stand at Autosport this year.

Is there a danger of over-cooling the oil?

yes and more if you couple it with a 71deg water stat.

yep, hence the comment i made about thermostatic control, aka the cooler is only working when oil reaches a certain temp.

even with an 80 deg thermostat you've still got a lot of cooling and it's not great when cruising dual carriageway, summer or winter. I should replace my 71 deg water stat which would help me. It's about getting the right balance for the car's use.

£70 ebay 13 row 80 degree thermostatic kit on my blob. Removed the stock modine and my temps are between 80-90 degrees. Mounted behind the fmic at the moment but going to look at fitting behind the grille.

Think it was a G-Plus kit, the fittings and quality were excellent, especially the pipework

My oil temps are currently 80 -90 on a warm day cruising and around 75 on a cooler evening. They do hit 100 maybe 105 if im using full boost for about 5 to 10 mins of spirited driving.
i was looking to get an oil cooler but if yours is running at the same temps as mine with a cooler im guessing i dont need one , i currently have only a relocated oil filter to behind my headlight

in front of fmic or rad would make a difference, also 13 row isn't a big cooler.

An oil cooler needs ducting into a enclosed shroud that surrounds the core, in order to make the most from it. No point in just hanging it out of the front of the car, or on top of the engine completely pointless. Behind the bumper in front of the wheels is a good place to mount as it can be ducted and shrouded easily enough. Buy a quality core. Mocal or Setrab

Thats not true chap, i had one fitted between the front mount and rad on my old classic, dropped temps from 105+ down to never going above 90.

Hi tidgy, yeah it'll still work when mounted like that, but they are substantially more effective more effective when ducted properly. Definitely worth doing
