I'd get the filter (and crush washer) from a good Subaru specialist, somewhere like RCM. As there are two patterns - the proper one, and the pattern one. Black and blue respectively, IIRC. But then their year of manufacture helps muddy the waters, too (I think).
Whatever, just ask for Olly and he'll advise...

Both Blue and Black OE filters are available from Subaru.
Both available from impartsb46, IM Motors on eBay.

Black and blue filters have been covered here before a few times. Blue are made by Honeywell with cardboard endcaps inside, Black is made by Tokyo Roki with all metal internal construction. They are both genuine Subaru parts available from dealers etc. Both work well and are interchangeable. Regards, Sam

Makes no difference (to my sentiment). Even if there were an inferior, ultra cheap, pattern filter, and it sold for as low as, say, even £1 as a result...why would you still buy it, anyway? That's the point I was making (albeit, perhaps not that clearly).
There are two different filters available of different construction. One better than the other. But the difference in price - and indeed their ultimate costs! - means that there's nothing to be gained by buying* the inferior one. Just buy the 'best possible available'.
* But if one's (only real) argument is to save some pennies (not even pounds), then I question their choice of vehicle, in the first place. And indeed their whole logic behind their 'upkeep of a performance car' rationale.
At least Frank gets it.

I remember yrs back there was a recall on the blue filters but haven’t heard any negative news since tbh. In saying that...The black filter always has been and still is a superior quality filter given the internals so why compromise for such a small outlay.
Makes no sense to me... esp if you’ve spent a few quid on the engine in the first place and running big power. IMO
And it’s got **** all to do with tomatoes

Exactly.
Even if the black one was, say, 3 times the price, I'd still buy it! In percentage terms of what one spends on these cars (in fuel alone lol), it'd still be a colossal no-brainer.
It really isn't worthy of further discussion, TBH.
