No OEM TD05 16g was ever front entry, as they were only ever fitted to the early phase 1 MY93-96 cars.

So you basically have 3 options open to thee:

1) get one from a specialist with a front entry comp. cover already fitted, all ready to bolt on

2) get the FE comp cover yourself and replace the OEM one with it, etc

3) or modify an OEM one by 'cutting and shutting' the top entry snorkel.

. . . Or instead get a similar performing <350bhp turbo...but which is already front entry.

To that end, the New Age STi VF35, or its roller-bearing cousin, the VF36, spring to mind. Both are capable of c.340bhp on a good day (the 36 possibly good for up to c.360, when all the ducks line up).

thanks Joz - so the newage TD05 would still need modification to fit or would that be Ok?

I jist want something that woukd fit straight in as I already have pink injectors, STI intercooler, walbro fuel pump And the last piece of the jigsaw is a bigger turbo before fitting/ mapping is it better to go for the VF35?

cheers

As said, there was never a TD05H 16g fitted to a New Age from the factory. As a result, none where ever commissioned/made by FHI/Mitsubishi with front-end entry comp. covers...intended for the Impreza.

Hence all your 'solutions' listed above.

If your heart is set on the TD, then by all means pursue option 1)* first. Andy Forrest used to sell them. Either the whole turbo... Or just comp covers, I believe.

But if a no go, then yeah, just go for the no fuss no muss VF35 route....

* Try AS Performance... Harvey Smith used to sell aftermarket TD turbos before his untimely death (RIP). And I believe ASP now sell his old stock. Although, of course, there may well be none left lol

Not overly bothered on which one I get just whatever is easier and less hassle and gives me good gains ... anything over 320 and I'll be happy!

Sorted.

Even the VF28 should easily make 320-330bhp. It was original fitment to my STi 5 and was really enjoyable in terms of its quick spool-up. And that was at the std 276bhp, to boot.

I've since 'moved on' to a TD05H 20g (and appropriate supporting mods) making 384/349. Okay, so compared to the VF28, it's a bit laggy...but the mid-/top-end rush is quite exciting lol

TD05 front entry turbos are all over the place and cheaper than VF series. Depends how you want your power delivered also.
