ok ladies and gentlemen
In the next couple of months I will have around £2000 at my disposal.I currently own a very tidy 1997 WRX.I have owned the car for nearly 8 years.Thoughts/possibilities include selling Impreza then get different Subaru.Modify current car esl & suspension & bushes refresh.Buy Kawasaki ZX9R & leave car alone.I have got quite a collection of parts I’ve accumulated over the years for my current car & I have quite an emotional connection with this car as only us truly sad Petrol heads will understand & would really love to see it finished properly how I have always seen it pictured in my mind.Cheers all

The amount of times you see posts where people massively regret selling a car that they had a genuine emotional bond with is telling. It's that whole becoming wise AFTER the event scenario.

The real litmus test is: do you reckon you'd be negatively affected - gutted/depressed lol - if you happened to see it being driven about your neighbourhood by a new owner? More often than not, the answer is an emphatic yes.

So with that in mind, keep her. And use the cash to modify to your taste/desired power, or whatever floats your classic boat and stuff lol.

If you sell her, I 'guarantee' you'll regret it.... Or at the very least hanker after another, at some point.


I've been over this conundrum a few times for my own car.... And have decided against (for all the reasons listed above).

If you car is relatively rust free and has some miles left in it then put some money into it , i’m assuning engine and g box is strong and in good order , you could buy another car find out it has issues and waste money on it sorting it out v making better what you have and know

Try finding a good clean classic. Just ain't happening now. Keep the car they only seem to be going on way in value at the moment

As a long term Subaru owner...13yrs and a bit... I'd say get out of it... I've done that recently and all I can say is I'm really glad I did.

As usual I've chosen the road less traveled and gone for a MK1 Golf 1.6 td.

Driving enjoyment has increased 10 fold and costs have reduced 10 fold... currently putting in a freshly refurbished engine which cost me the princely sum of £60 including a rear bumper and turbo... all new steering bushes and track rod ends @ circa 40 quid for both sides along with all new hoses... as in every single hose on the car @ 30 quid the lot... and new Ferrodo discs and pads for £35... the list goes on and on... clutch £50, water pump £15, timing belt £7, tensioner £10 all 4 engine mounts £30.

I've literally made the whole front end of the car like new for 250 quid... fooking amazing and such a refreshing change... also swapped new refirbed suspension for an extra centre console that came with the car.

Seriously doubt that I'll ever own another Subaru... Been there and done that to death, in my mind it's a bit of a mugs game.

I now drive a car that has similar if not more Kudos for a fraction of the price... ok it's not a GTI but it doesn't need to be because at circa 120bhp it's got almost the same power and does 60 mpg... Works for me.

A few years back I had a 1981 Capri that cost me £300 and a 1970 Cortina that cost £400. Ok so it was 10 years ago.
I sold them and now I regret it because even a ropey Capri will cost £4k and about £3k for the Cortina.
At that time you could buy a Saphire Cossie for £1500 and most were broken so the engines could go in Escorts.
Now even a Rwd Saphire Cossie is about £15k.
Impreza prices are already climbing back up.
Yes money isn't everything.

I agree with the keepers. I have just got my first Impreza and I can't see them doing much but going up in value. I was lucky enough to have a Z3 M Coupe and sold that at the lowest point of the market! For 12k Gutting! It would have been worth 30k now!

I had a Blu Madras Integrale Evo I in stunning condition.... Until some bloke under the influence understeered into it and wrote it off. (Thankfully the LHD probably saved me from the impact otherwise shattering my lower legs!)

I did well out of the insurance payout though - ended up getting around, IIRC, c.£12,500 (when its purchase price at the time was £9,999).

However, if only I still had her now..... Have you seen the prices?!

Same with most cool Jap cars, rx7 Supra,200sx, skyline etc all going up in value.
