The only mappers I'd use after almost 15yrs of Subaru ownership.

Pat @ Scooby clinic.
Martyn @ Engine tuner.
Bob Rawl.
Steve Simpson.
Andy Forest.
Paul ex Zen Performance but not sure if he still maps for Joe Public.

Personal preference of course... but based on what I've heard and read on here... in no particular order... I'd wait until one of the above was free.

Alan builds the engines and Martyn (his son) maps them.

I'd add Andrew Carr to that list too. He's great.

Not sure who Mark @ Thwaits is... I have heard the odd mention of him though... but nothing bad is all I can say.

Wouldn't use Andrew Carr either, but again that's just my opinion and choice based on what I've seen over the years... a lot of threads where people can't contact him... if I'm giving out my hard earned I want to know that should there be a problem, I'm not going to have to chase someone to get it sorted.

I think this is where most peoples frustration initially comes from. As others have said, people make mistakes...... even mappers, but its when you spend weeks trying to sort out something potentially serious, for many on a daily driver that the relationship starts to fall apart.

Duncan has mapped my V5 track car and my 2012 STI, both ran and drove perfectly, really happy with both cars.

He literally replies within a few minutes also.

Exactly, just depends on if he fancies it that morning I suppose, if he don't he will steam through a txt that morning, something along the lines of saying " nah not today pal" regardless of the customers commitments and plans, glad you had a good service with him though.

There lies the problem with the internet "but based on what I've heard and read on here... in no particular order" people without first hand experience become experts by what they've read on the internet. Problem with the internet is that its easy to vent to a huge audience, character assains roam free.

Right; in Duncans defence.... I have had excellent service and results, no issues at all. I gave him a fresh professional built engine and I was aware of its limitations and discussed this with him. The result has been a reliable fast car that has been driven hard on track and strip for four years. I was completely honest with him with the spec and he didnt push it beyond its limits.
This was on a fresh built engine built by arguably but without doubt one of the best builders in the country. It wasnt a 20 year old unknown unit or built from used parts on my garage floor.

When the customer "exagerates" the spec and lets face it no one says the mapper "its an unknown engine" or "I built it on the driveway with a halfords tool set and mole grips" and if they get their info from scooby net, any JDM spec blah blah can make handle 400 bhp then why cant their breakers yard mongrel engine do the same and be honest, who tells the mapper my engine is a standard spec 150k mile dog that uses a litre of oil a week?

So out of all you guys that are running dynamix down, how many of you had a recently built hand on heart 100% no faults engine mapped by him?

And whilst we're destroying peoples businesses... I went to An Other mapper mentioned in this post after the last batch of mods. He connected his laptop charger onto my battery and nearly set my car on fire. He then proceeded to drive the car around for four hours with his lap top on the passenger seat while it ran like a dog. I told him after the first hour there was something seriously wrong and it wasnt going to fix itself but hey ho what do I know? Took it to Duncan he spotted a wiring fault in the MAP sensor straight away and fixed it in seconds, he also spotted the unmatched injectors straight away and cancelled the session. The other mapper was slow to spot these faults and this is a mapper that cant do no wrong on scoobynet.

A bit of advice, just cos your car makes the same power as a super car it doesnt mean you can drive it like one all the time, supercars are designed and built to do it from the factory. Your modified car is um modified it might make 350 for 5 mins or a lifetime depending how you treat it.

^^^ well said. I had duncan map a previous car that run with out fault for over 4 years. Current blob mapped by andrew carr. 2 years on not a problem. Changed my intercooler 6months ago and was hitting boost cut. This was on a thursday when i knew he was mapping in my local area at m.b developments. Quick call and with in an hour he had tweaked map. When 1st had my current blob it was mapped by a company/mapper that is top of a list on this thread and its was poor hence reason i got it mapped again by andrew.

that's just built upon assumptions, not facts.
The facts appear to be, your ecu didn't turn up, if it had the mapping would have gone ahead. The slot was kept open in the hope the ecu would arrive.
To try and make out Duncan just didn't feel like it that day, we're just not that stupid mate.

That is the impression I got I'm afraid, again I'm not calling the man a rubbish mapper who doesn't know what he's doing, I'm merely saying his communication and customer service skills are left to be desired, from my experience, that's all people can call by is experience and mine is bad yours is probably good.

I wouldn't hesitate to go back to Duncan, who mapped my last wagon on the road. He also tweaked it for free. If you search threads on Irish forums you will find many people very unhappy with one of the "famous" mappers listed above, and 3 of us in the hatch section have had issues with so called faultless mappers. Part of the problem seems to be the separation of mapping and garage services, so when an issue occurs during mapping, it cannot be dealt with.

This is exactly why I am drawn to using Engine Tuner in Plymouth, as you say having your own place to make alterations or adjustments surely is the way forward.

I was thinking more Rich at FB, or Mark at TDR, where the mapper does mechanics as well; Martyn solely maps

I think that there is certainly an argument for having your car mapped by the same people who installed any performance parts. Not least because they would hopefully spot any issues at the time but also because you avoid getting into a dance between mapper/mechanic as to who is at fault if things go awry.

For those of us putting the initial map on with a set of mods, it would be useful to get a list of recommended companies that map and have the facility to do the spanner work as well.

The bad experience I had was with a I do everything company. I would rather work with specialists.

surely you can have a garage that employs a specialist tuner and has a rolling road?

You wont find many.........I looked.

After an extensive search I think Clinic, Zen, TDR, Enginetuner and slowboy were the ones I found that could do the work AND map it in house but I then heard various nightmares from 3 out of those 5, and after my experience last year I wont be returning to Clinic thats for sure. Richard Henry now get any work I can't do myself but I'm unsure if I'll use Andy Carr for mapping when the time comes.

To be fair, every business has times when things go belly up. I worked self employed on recommendations only, for 25 years, but still would have 5 or so clients where things went terminally pear-shaped. It's how a business deals with issues afterwards that really matters. Tuning Subarus is always going to be a minor risk, tbh.

I'm a weekly regular at Richard Henry's, the owner being a very good friend of mine. Andrew Carr maps all the Richard Henry cars, they have worked closely for many years . I would highly recommend him
