Default JDM Exhausts - how to make them sound better

I recently bought a JDM Blobeye STI and I like the car but its sound needs improving. What's the cheapest way to get it sounding nicer? I test drove a few UK cars and I really miss the burble. I'm not looking to replace it, but I would like a little something. Even considering a dump valve to add a little noise as currently it just sounds a little 'Mondeo' if you know what I mean.

I can't spend a fortune as I also want to pick up some other bits. Would just a backbox make much difference and if so what is decent? I was half tempted by an Afterburner box from Scoobyworld but at £260 and not being sure it would make much difference I have been hesitant to take the plunge.

Also, do UK back boxes fit JDM cars?

What do you currently have? Yes all UK exhausts are the same, only different is twin scroll models. I'd loose the dump valve, although best one i had was a bailey one, but not good for the engine.

I'd go for a cat back system, all depends on level of noise, mine has a powerflow, nice deep burble. But my system is 3" bore. I've had a Jap style system, and that got way to loud, just driving at 40 sounded like i was doing 140 lol.

Currently I have the standard JDM sti exhaust (and my car is a twin scroll) which I believe is a 2.5 inch bore. I have heard the Nur Spec is loud but I don't want drone on the motorway. Zany whats the Nur spec like over longer distances?

The videos are all UK cars though. I just don't think they make as much difference on JDM cars?

Should be ok with a bung Ive still to get one though on my list of to do things but at the bottom for now

Genome backbox (about £300 but you'll get that back on resale)

Aftermarket full systems do come up for sale at not unreasonable prices. I just sold a full Milltek for £250. My full RCM will be on sale soon for £400.

(Didn't like the sound of the Milltek or the RCM. The H+S system, on the other hand, sounds amazing.)

Sounds Good Zany, did you have the pops mapped in?

I have full H&S 3" true system from the turbo back and it sounds very good.

Something to bear in mind when watching vids is that the sound outside the car =/= inside the car. Both my Milltek and RCM sounded pretty nice to bystanders, but totally meh from the driver's seat where it matters.

The twinscroll loses the some of the burble due to equal length headers. I have twin NUR Specs on my twinscroll Leggy.
The OE DV is probably the best out there unless you want attention.

UL manifold is no good for a twin scroll.
The cobra system sounded really nice that I had,not too loud in the car,too much of a rumble for my neighbors to handle so I changed it in the interest of peace&love lol
Now running a revolution which is subtle but sounds nice when you hit the loud pedal.

My neighbours aern't even happy with my peace loving Powerflow 3" system, its not that loud, and still get moaned at. I say neighbours i mean just the one.

Must admit jay I do kind of miss the UL burble, the cobra went some way to making up for it but I like to try and keep the peace, sold it to a member on here and he was happy, believe it made well over 400+bhp so it did flow well too.

Upon arrival into the UK my s202 was running the stock three piece exhaust system. Before anyone asks, yes, even though it's newage this model was produced with the classic three piece system. the back box is titanium. Idling you could barely hear it when warmed up, but made a huge racket with full boost engaged.

After a while the centre pipe developed a hole due to corrosion and I decided to swap it out with a Hayward and Scott replacement centre pipe (comes with a silencer if you really wanted). Everything else remained as is. It completely changed the sound the car makes, even when idling, and now sounds much more like I would have expected it to sound.

im running an RCM 2.5inch backbox on mine, I didn't want anything loud.

It has a nice low tone with no drone, but really comes alive from 5.5k to 8K.

I think its about £350 odd I cant remember.

So maybe a new centre section would make as much difference as a new backbox?
I've seen some companies make a backbox delete, basically a bit of pipe with a shiny tailpipe on the end. They are charging well over £200 for these which seems crazy, I'm sure I could get the same for half that at powerflow. Would losing a box make any difference regarding back pressure and performance? I seem to remember in my old renaultsport days that other Megane owners would cut the centre box out to give volume and performance wasn't really affected.

I was told back pressure is a myth but others say it isn't very confusing that one

An S202 is not twinscroll so will have the classic Subaru burble.
Unless you swap out quite a few bits you won't get it but will have an inferior car.

Perdoimpreza, UK cars have unequal length exhaust headers giving them the 'Subaru burble'. Import cars have a twin scroll turbo and equal length headers, meaning they don't sound at all like a UK car. UK sounds far better (to me) but people will tell you to buy a JDM car over UK as they are a better car
