Should have done it when the downpipe was off. It's a turbo off job really.

Good luck with leaving it in place, it's a lot less hassle to remove it though.

You can leave it in place, but you will need to remove downpipe anyway.

The only bit I don't like is lifting the engine up, is that 100% nessercary??

Only way to get clearance for the larger turbo flange past the chassis rails.
the forester engine sits lower than an Impreza one due to the spacers fitted between chassis and front crossmember.

Easiest way - remove turbo and pull it out via the top

Removing down pipe and turbo is by far the easiest way to change the up pipe. It isn't a big job. The hardest part is loosening bolts that are seized solid due to the heat

I never remove the turbo...down pipe off,undo the engine mounts,jack the engine up and remove from underneath...job done.

put a block of wood under the engine sump to prevent damage then jack from there.

Hence the "block of wood" to spread the load. You are only lifting the engine not the whole vehicle.

undo both the 14mm headed nuts from the mounts that go through the sub frame either side of engine from underneath...if that makes sense.

Harvey Smith 'trick' up-pipes are NOT solid but have a specific slip-joint (as well as being specifically sized for various applications)

the std up-pipe has a bellows style flexi joint

all to allow for heat expansion

queue turbo removal and hrs of bashing to remove the nuts from the studs so i could re-use my turbo
