Try test driving on a empty smooth road or big car park to determine if the discs maybe warped etc, my abs was kicking in too early causing judder when braking hard but after installing a brake stopper kit my pedal is a lot more firm and brakes are much sharper aswell

Maybe a good idea would be to check balancing on the wheels not very costly this will also rule out any slight buckles and condition of the tyres as well not that costly and give you piece of mind on that side of things, discs usually get warped as well with people keeping there brakes pressed at the lights when they are hot instead of using the parking brake...

My hatch eats discs about every 6 months, no idea why. I have had it checked by 2 very respected specialists who have both said that they can not find anything wrong, tried different discs, though every 6 months the front, drivers side disc will warp.
Having looked around on other forums this is not uncommon. A new front set always cures the issue, for a time.

When I have had this on a non Subaru as you say new discs removed the issue short term.
After replacing discs twice it was clear that there was another issue.
So replaced wheel bearing and a 3rd set of discs fitted same again after a few months.
So so I changed the hub for a second hand used unit I had and hey presto problem solved 2 years without issue.
I would say either hub or flange issue or possible bearing. Hard to know 100% and checking all parts with a dial gauge may help determin which it is but replace the hub/bearing/flange and new discs and pads and job will be a good un. It's just not cheap that's all.

This could be my problem as there is also a knock or bearing crunch when going from forward to reverse or vice vers not all the time though sounds like a bike wheel when the bearings gone not got round to investigating yet dont do alot of miles in car only moves every other weekend and thats only around town
