Default Hibernation...

Do most of you guys put your motors off the road for the winter or do some of you run them through the winter but keep on top of cleaning etc?

I was planning on running the wagon through the winter but I'm now thinking because it's a nice clean example for its age then that's maybe not the best idea.....I'm a nervous wreck thinking about it

I think I'd need to get it undersealed if I were to run it through the winter but after reading up about it and about how it's needs to be done correctly and for the underside to be bone dry it's put me off. It's been done previously but we don't know exactly when.

Another thing to worry about

Can understand what you're saying but if it is your second then yeah put it away. But like others have said they are meant to be driven in all sorts of conditions.

Get it under sealed and if you are worried about it then do it yourself.

Never bothered with summer or winter tyres but then I do mainly city driving. Having said that good tyres are a must.

I'm trying to find somewhere to store mine but I have a blown engine

I won't worry about it too much then, I'll get it undersealed though just to be on the safe side.

Didn't mean it like that mate lol

Not sure how many garages are near you or how much you trust them hence why I said you could do it yourself.

Off the road for 6 months every year since 2003

There's a reason the classics are all rotten - our ****ty climate!

Surprise surprise, mine isn't.

Nope,it's my car, that's what it is. So whether it's a two bob Impreza or an exotic super car is beside the point. I'd like to look after it hence the original question. Clearly over your head though.

We have a n/a wagon as well and it's got a fair bit of rust, hence my worry with this one and with it being very solid and clean looking i'd like to keep it that way.

But in saying that Thrush above seems to think that it's not worth while seeing as its only a 2 bob wagon

It's your car - if you want to look after it, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Don't forget to wrap in cotton wool whilst it's in "hibernation"...

Despite all the remarks about its a car and dont forget to rap it up in cotton wool i keep mine out of the weather in the winter, normally store it from October to around march time depending on the weather.

I love my car and i enjoy driving it, i don't enjoy using it to get stuck in traffic on the way to work or let dick heads damage it in supermarket car parks, dont enjoy the damage the bodywork suffers from all the winter grime etc. Most cars i see on the road these days are absolute heaps, 2-3 years old and a mess.

As I previously said it's clearly went straight over your head. I simply asked what others did during the ****ty winter months. You seem to be a little presumtious that I'm putting the motor off the road for the winter hence another idiot comment from you, highly expected though. Don't worry I plan on using it as it's just a car.......and worth 2 bob.

Cotton wool does sound good though

Might put our wagon in the garage at night, through the winter, but other than that it will get used most days.

Same here, mates take the mick sometimes about the amount of time mine spends in the garage, but its more of an occasion when i drive it, plus it would have rotted away years ago if not, luckily the first owner paid extra to have it wax oil from new so its solid.

I will keep it on the road till the frost arrives then back garage till summer, plus gives me plenty of time to do the many jobs i want done.

I drive my RB5 through the winter, would hate to want to drive it and not able to due to it being SORN.

But, only take it out if dry. Some of the best driving days are winter days when it is cold but clear. I like to run it once a fortnight, luckily it is my third car so has the luxury of being used only when I want to take it out for a blast.

Don't store it fully, they are meant to be used, having it sat doing nothing is just as bad for it. Just keep it out the worst of the weather.

Enjoy it.

For what it costs to tax the car for an extra 6 months you may as well tax it all year round. Should you want to take it for a blast then you can do. As already said some of the best driving days are when its cold and dry. Look how dry October's been, we've probably had better days this month than in July up here!

Depends where you live. In winter the roads around here are white with salt during dry days. Would still mean the underside getting covered in it.

I've been running an older car in the summer months for coming on 20 years now and always take it off the road between November and May. Scooby driving is a fair weather pastime for me - a bit like my golf. If I lived in the south of England, I'd probably keep it taxed all year and use it regularly in the winter. However, for us living up here in the north of Scotland where we can have salt on the roads for 6 months of the year, running an older car all year round isn't the best if you're trying to keep it in good condition. I haven't done any additional undersealing to mine but just ensure it is clean and bone dry prior to storing each winter.

If you've got garage room and an alternative vehicle to use, makes sense to save the scoob for drier/salt free blasts in winter. I use my classic on weekends only Nov-Feb and connect battery to maintenance charger if left longer than a week. Underbody sealed anyways so ready for the snow if/when it comes. Car feels even more ballistic after a week driving the van

20 year old classic here, garaged during winter and only used in fine weather during winter. No rusty parts on my car. If it's a goodun and a keeper it makes sense to lay it up during winter months. Keep the battery charged if it's alarmed and maybe put it up on axel stands if it's left standing for months.

Mine goes away every winter, however I do use it if the weather is good enough on occasion. that’s why I keep it taxed and insured through the winter, as it’s nice to know you can use it if I feel the need.

Mine is a second car and only get used now and again, I like to keep it in the best condition possible.

Each to their own I suppose

Mine's driven all year round but if it gets salted up I use a Karcher patio cleaner upside down and pressure wash the underside of the car with it. 2002 Bug, no rust.

Pretty sure salts not too big an issue when dry, its when the roads wet and covered in salt. It sprays up and coats the underside
