Simple question

Can they be registered into the UK once imported from Japan?

Yes, once it arrives here, the importing company registers the vehicle with DVLA which is my understanding.

It might well need type approval report plus an SVA test at the local VOSA test centre (not your normal test centre), then the registration process can be started.

It might well be worth getting in touch with the DVLA to ask them the correct procedure Boyd.

Make sure you can sort a model report to be registered, IIRC ian at litchfield used to charge £1-£1.5k for the use of the model report to get a car registered, Not sure if this has changed but you wont get the car on the road until this is sorted, Not sure if this is for less than 10 years old or not or even if it still applies...worth checking.

Simple answer YES.

Long answer, YES but its not cheap.... -

The above is 100% and still currently the process.

Any car's 10 years or older (Registered date) will simply just require a MOT after notifiying the DVLA of the car arriving (or prior to its arrival).

Any car under 10 years of age, requires a SVA to be completed - on Limited edition/rare cars - this is where it gets expensive.

Also if you are importing the car yourself, you need to also pay the import duty and VAT of the value of the car (including duty), and all port fees...

Pretty much what I thought regarding model reports etc. SVA is not a problem as the Ford GTs I work on also need one so I know where that can be done.

Would only Iain at Litchfields hold a model report for the mentioned models?

I think they use the IVA now so its on a car by car basis rather than an SVA, Immy should be able to tell you more

If it was 10 years or older at import then the car would only require a standard VOSA test.

Anything like a R205 will require more than a model report and is not easy to register at all. Ask Max at Hurst cars he will tell you took him the best part of 6 months to get the red type ra sorted!

You would still most probably be waiting a while to get a nice jdm hawk unless you can get your old one back !!

I can't imagine you'd get much change from £25k at current prices.

A grade 4.5 or 5 car would most likely cost well in excess of this.

Hugely desirable cars and still quite new.

IVA pdf for those interested, sounds like it will make importing cars more accessable to general public. That doc reds like SVA is no longer required if you go IVA. litchfield must be rather narked at that, no more charging people for the sva docs

Don't be so sure of yourself, will still require a model report. Anything that is taken from the production line and tuned does not comply to IVA regs.
R205, ra-r, type RA and S204 once they become 10 years old it's a peace of ****.
