If it's a straight forward synchro swap and can get the repair done at that price then I'd say a few hundred quid at least off a fully known working one that COMES WITH WARRANTY from a breaker. Thats it see things are advertised private sales and prices are close to those of breakers, so when you weigh the 2 up it makes more sense buying from a breaker.
I was told that my dccd JDM 6 speed is a lot more involved when stripping apart, don't know what it entails I'll be honest
so if you do buy it and it turns out it may need a little more work than first anticipated your left with either taking it on the chin, or possibly selling it back on with the problems listed and probably loose money.Is it a DCCD box Banny? As that affects the price as well ( don't want to sound as if I'm trying to educate you
) but in my eyes dccd boxes are around £1500+ depending on mileage and quick sales etc from what I'VE personally seen so I'd say <1k for a dccd box.Non dccd JDM 6 speed around £1300+ so I'd be around £800, I'd want £500 in my head at least to cover expenses but that's just me

The carbon coated synchro's are fitted as standard to Hatchback STi, no models before that. Price seems to vary as IM keep moving the exchange rate goalposts We have worked on £42.00 + VAT each, as it covers us for the fluctuations. Fitting is £360.00 + VAT for a box strip and change of synchros.
The synchro rings on all 6 speeders are the same from 2001 up to the carbon type change point. The reason that bugs seem weaker, is because they are that bit older.
It is rare that you can get away with just fitting the carbon rings as there is often damage to the selector dog teeth on the gears or the hubs and no amount of convincing yourself they be OK will make them so. Faulty dog teeth will just cause your shiny new carbon rings to wear out and you'll be doing it all again.
Plus; the 'nylon' anti rattle pads on the selector forks wear away and new forks are required. As once the pads have fallen off, the fork can twist whilst selecting gears and snap the ends off. Forks are about £180.00 each.
Gear costs vary, but expect around £110 - £130.00 + VAT each and hubs are about £130- £180.00 + VAT each too. One hub now has to have a matching upgraded gear, if I recall, which makes it an expensive do to change.

PLUS many of the earlier bug eye 6 speeders we see brought in, have busted centre diffs in them and they cost about £485.00 + VAT to buy. Buy any bug eye 6 speeder carefully, as it could cost £1000.00 to fix before fitting if you are unlucky.

Sounds like your better off waiting for a good one to come up. Unless you have a figure in mind that a good box is worth then make an arrangement with the seller that involves you fixing it and split the cost accordingly, i'd say £1600 is a fair shout to end up with a box in perfect condition.
So if he lets you have it for £1k and it costs £600 to sort it's even stevens.
I think you've offered a fair price at £1k for an un-known entity any more and you could get stung, he's asking too much at £1400 imo as it could end up costing £2k all done.
You could always borrow Maz's car for the day and do a sneaky swap, i'm sure he wouldn't notice.

gearbox was repaired and broke again less then 500 miles later, by that time he had enough and stripped the car for parts!!!

The complete centre dccd unit is about £2700 + VAT
A new repair set of plates from Japan, or possibly RCM, is about £1200.00 + VAT.
If the electrics are out, the unit can be re-wound [ like an alternator field coil ] at about £200.00 + VAT
We just finished one that we had to sit and wait 'til a deal came along for our customer at the right price. that took 13 months. He was not in a hurry....
We have investigated making the replacement plates but on test they distorted too easily and we have since dropped the idea.
Makes fixing non dccd ones seem a good deal dunnit ??

This happened to my mates blob JDM 6 speed box, When he had it sent away to be repaired(not by yourself I may add) he was told that these had to be ordered from Japan and was hard to come by???

BUT if there is it will make your eyes water.
