intercooler fans
im toying with the idea of fitting fans on the underside of my sti8 intercooler to help tackle heatsoak, ive been searching for some suitable fans for a while now and ive found one off a suzuki gsx 1000 radiator and a 12v pc fan. the bike fan is very powerfull and creates a very good suction through the intercooler, im not sure whether to use both of them or just the rad fan as i dont want to lose to much of the intercoolers effiency.

what do you think? has anyone else tried this?
i want to get as much info on this as possible before i start fabricating brackets to mount them properly. thanks

I thought about doing this and my comments are:
Good to reduce heat soak before a track session/drag run.
It would probably hinder airflow when not in use.
I decided against doing it because I always do a warm up lap anyway to warm the tyres, which also cools the TMIC. It would weigh more. It would need a switch and more wiring. I would want it to be automatic but I couldn't be arsed to find a way to do that. It’s hard enough fitting the TMIC without adding fans to the underside!
If ambient temps are low the TMIC cools down really fast on my car (not so when the ambient is 30’s though). I concentrated on heat shielding and air flow instead.
Good project though. I miss the old cheap and cheerful project threads

ive just fitted the one fan for now to see how it goes as i dont want to loose to much effency of the intercooler.

Good project James, I wrapped the pipes under my intercooler with heat barrier reflective sheet thingys from MPC. After taking my intercooler off 20mins after driving, the pipes under the intercooler was still quite hot. After wrapping them they seemed to be much cooler! Dont know how much difference it made, but its only a cheap mod anyway!
We'll see if it makes a difference on the rolling road in the next couple of weeks.

just make sure you wire the fan the right way round so its pulling air through the cooler and not blowing heated air from underneath back through ...... other than that i think flat4 did this on his project car,but poss general airflow through the core might be restricted due to the fans position...... good idea to try and help though........ still think ill beat ya though

the fan is all wired up and working now, ive been out for a quick test run and it definatly stops the heat soak temps rising so im happy with it, i need to go for a longer run tho to test it properly. the fan is just wired up through a relay and simple on and off switch (i used the bright switch on the dashboard). Im now wondering if there was some kind of temp switch that i could wire in so that it kicks in automaticly at a certain temp. does anyone know of anything i could use?

depends on what tempreture you want it to kick in at you could hook into the cooling fan wire ,or if you need it before then you could wire it through a timer unit so it kicks in every ten mins or rock the boat and buy a adjustable timer unit it so you can set it whenever you want

ive managed to source this little fella from rs components, its a thermal switch that opens at 35o C.

Would it be benificial to mount a fan away from the intercooler a touch say on the gearbox brace so that the air can still flow through the cooler without hinderance but it can still create a downward movement of air, it may not pull as much through the cooler itself but it would be a good compromise maybe???

prob pull more air from around the base of the cooler than that flowing through it..... fan needs to be against the body of the cooler to have any hope of pulling air through it,we have problems at work with the rebuilt engines on the trains i work on,company have sent back many with the rad fans not sealed to the rads them selves on the edges ( they come a s a complete raft assembly engine trans and cooler group ) and doing a air flow pull test through the rads when running revealed a big drop in air flow,sealing the edges cured this so no more overheating problems,a gap of 5mm made a big difference so siting the fans away from the intercooler would i think actually not pull much air through the intercooler at all....... then of course there is the problem of the fans being an obstruction to air flow when they are not running as jame's has his set to activate at a certain temp,but as under light load and no boost the temp should be low enough not to worry about so might be ok
