Default 450bhp track based target

Car is an STI 5 RA Ltd, with a built 2 litre which should be capable of running 450bhp all day long

I'll give a rundown on current spec, then list what I have acquired and what I think I will need to achieve this target. Any advice on other components that you would recommend would be gratefully received

Oh and the car will be used mainly for track events including Time Attack

Car - STI 5 RA Ltd

Engine
Built 2 litre shortblock
STI7/8 cross-drilled crank
ACL Race bearings
H-Section forged rods
Mahle Powerpak pistons
STI 5 heads - standard
ARP head studs
RCM modified oil pump
Standard sump

Fuelling
In tank SX high flow pump (I was told it was an SX, but not sure they even make them - so I'll assume Walbro 255)
SX FPR and filter
Apexi 550cc injectors

Other Engine related
HKS FMIC
HMS Racing Suction inlet kit
GEMS ECU
MD191 Turbo
Oil Cooler - non thermostatic

Brakes
AP 4 pot 330mm front brakes
Standard 2-pot rear

Suspension
Leda B adjustable dampers with progressive rate springs - recently rebuilt and new springs
Thicker antiroll bars front & rear
Anti lift kit
Cusco under body brace
Poly bushes all-round
Solid drop links
Rear subframe locking bolts
Front and rear strut braces

Wheels
Speedline GT1 Lites - 18"x7.5"

Recent acquisitions - not yet fitted
MD321T Turbo with 3" samco inlet pipe
740cc injectors
HKS tubular headers
APS 3.5" full exhaust system inc downpipe
Apexi AVCR

Other parts I know I need and plan to get
Wideband AFR
Parallel fuel rail mod
Bucket seat and harness
Tyres - Yokohama A048 - 225/40/18

Finally - ideas that I think will benefit my plans
Swirl pot with external pump - so in tank (lifter) pump feeding swirl pot then Bosch 044 (or similar) feeding fuel line
Baffled/ Winged high capacity sump
6-point bolt in rollcage - to aid car stiffness as well as extra safety
Custom cold air intake - to feed under bonnet custom made enclosure for air filter - this could be achieved by removing headlight to aid airflow, or come from driving light surround
Solid, adjustable topmounts so I can dial in extra castor at front and extra camber front and rear
Brake support bracket

I would appreciate any comments you have on my plans - especially my thoughts on the final section. I aim to have all the parts fitted and remapped by mid Jan - till then I will go on buying parts

Cheers and Merry Christmas

Terry

This all looks good terry, its going to be a great challenge for me to try and stay ahead of you this year, the parts youve listed all sound very good, lets hope they work well together

I hope so mate - sure we'll have a great laugh whatever happens

I pick up so much info from this site and 22B.com and speaking to many people - but I suppose this is the 1st time I've actually put it all together.

Seat + 6 point harness
Cage padding (sorry, that might be obvious, so often missed!)
More suspension? Bars and bushes?? (but I would say that)
1B tyres?

You will have a very drivable car with the the mods I think Terry.
Will be interested to see your in-tank swirl pot mod. I think MRT Performance - Subaru specialists do several.
Hope you do some pics/details for us all.

I think the TA series would be a very good series to do indeed, and i look forward to seeing how a Hill climber doeas on the track .

Where are the TA Regs?

Graham.

I wasn't planning on changing the rev limit from standard STI 5 - so I guess 8200 rpm or something like that I used ACL Race bearings for the main and big ends in the build - as I have had 2 big end related engine failures this year after high rpm applications.

Good info Graham. Yes a bucket seat and harness is on the cards too - will add to my list in the 1st post.

What are your thoughts on bolt-in rollcages helping the stiffness of the car? In 2008 I plan to go the whole hog with a proper weld-in cage - WRC style - which I'm sure will have a big impact on stiffness.

As for the swirl pot set-up - I have more investigation to do -so thanks for the link and I'll post my ideas up on this thread.

Cheers

Terry

Would it be worth replacing the valves for stronger ones for a bit of extra safety. Or if you do end up going for more power down the road you wont have to take it all apart again.

Terry:
Cage as a bolt-in 6 point will add very little stiffness IMO.
On the road mine vibrates about =/- 3 or 4 mm at 70 mph at the A pillar so not exactly rigid.
If it were tied by bolting to the screen pillars/seatbelt shoulder high mounts and the main B pillar hoop diagonal to the trans tunnel then things would be different.
Do you need an FIA cage for TA?
If not, a 6 point welded in would be a good protection and light.

A full multi would really stiffen things up.

Well the engine has been built and is in the car, so no plans to take the engine out at this stage - as all the build work is complete. After 2007 season, I may well go down a bigger engine capacity route and indeed work on the heads

Cheers Graham. No cage required for TA, unless in the Tuner category, which is not me. Full regs can be found on the Time Attack Series - Official Website website.

I'd start saving as the STI5 box will not last.

Terry - why 18's? I hope it ain't cos I stole your 17's (which I'll be using for TA!)

Hopefully you'll come up here for the KH round as I am only home for 2 of the 4 events.......................Knockhill and Rockingham! It would be good to put a face to the name!

The gearbox will just have to wait until it goes. I don't want to commit financially to an uprated box if I MAY get good use out of it. It would appear from reading many threads that some last a while and others don't - hopefully I'll be one of the lucky ones

Russell - I prefer the handling on 18's - as I've been using them for the last 3 years - and had a try with 17's this year - so back to what I know best - but the 1st time with track tyres on 18's

Terry, knowing your luck with engines are you really sure you want to risk the 'box too?

Depending on what you want your car to do - I think this spec will be pretty hard to beat. If you wanted more of a road car, then I guess the MD321H turbo would be better - good for 400bhp and full boost at 3700rpm on a 2 litre

Nah, not me...

I guess I have learned some mechanical sympathy since then, plus track driving is less frantic than sprint/ hillclimbing

I am looking to sprint and maybe also do the TA clubman, also do a few trips to the Nurburgring, not after big horsepower, but could be keen on a solid high 300's and good torque with excellent low down grunt, how did you find the MD191??

My MD191 has seen better days. It is meant as a replacement for the VF28 to run at 1.5 bar and between 350 to 370bhp.

I think a TD05/06-18G would be a much better turbo - spooling up much earlier and making the same if not more power - will definately make more boost.

However a better alternative might be an MD321H - which can hit full boost at 3700rpm on a 2 litre - very good results and a proven 400bhp turbo. Who will be doing your mapping? Have a word with that person for ideas.

I was thinking of the TD05-18g but due to being a tight scotsman I thought i was worth asking about your MD191, TBH I don't know a lot about that particulat turbo, I have spoken with Mark at Lateral regarding the MD321H but the cost put me off slighty, as i have just had my engine built to a very similar spec to yours, and so spending another 1.5k on a turbo is not in the plans at the mo.

as for mapping, I have yet to sorted that, as I haven't decided on which ECU route to go down, just looking into the new Link G3 at the mo, seems like a good sepc, and at a reasonable cost compared to a Autronic or GEMS, but its brand new and I can't find any feedback on it as yet.

I could be keen on your 550cc injectors tho if you are selling them?
